Back in the day ,,, was SUNDAY DINNER a big event

There is a lot of garbage and unkind things on Facebook, but here is one of the many good things that show up.  I have just copied a  part of 11,000 replies to this question. --

Judy Mcgraw
- Big Sunday dinner after church. Before we left for church, Mother put a roast with carrots, potatoes, and cabbage. Slow oven and what a wonderful smell when we entered the house. My children were raised with that Sunda roast and I often make that roast for my Sunday dinner...always after church !!!

Jane Neeb Shelton - Judy Mcgraw So when is dinner on Sunday! Just joking!🀣

Judy Mcgraw - Jane Neeb Shelton we both know lots about Sunday church and our family's Sunday dinner.!!!Uncle Otto was your Grandpa Banker, wasn't he. It was First Wesleyan at that time, wasn't it? Stan and I are Quakers now. Lindsay goes to one of those Nondefinitional churches now. But like you, the core values that we were raised into, remain unchanged!!!

Jane Neeb Shelton Actually, it was Pilgrim Holiness then it changed to Wesleyan and now it is Bible Holiness. The church is now moved out to the edge of town. Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma Banker were the first charter members. I loved Sunday dinner and especially when we would have family gatherings. I now go to the First Church of the Nazarene, But like you said the core values are still there and will never change.

Judy Mcgraw - Jane Neeb Shelton I have vague memories of going to visit Great Gma and GPA house after Sunday dinner. Then we would have to leave to go back to Clemso to restart school. How about you, Stan and me do lunch over in Shelbyville soon. You can show us all the places of our childhood memories. I'll check with Stan about planning that memory trip...

Andrea Beacham - Jane Neeb Shelton it was always late afternoon early evening in our house

Jane Neeb Shelton I would love truly love it. Just let me know when.

Judy Mcgraw I'll talk to Stan and well talk soon.

Patricia Thomas - Judy Mcgraw same here

Alan Christie - Judy Mcgraw my mom started dinner and my dad would take care of when rest of family went to church.

Diane Wiley Collins - Judy Mcgraw now it’s 50 bucks for the roast alone

Sheila Stanley Churchill - Diane Wiley Collins And that's only big enough to feed 2.

Peggy Serena Barrows - Judy Mcgraw same here, church while the oven was cooking the roast, mine never taste as good

Judy Mcgraw - Peggy Serena Barrows Mothers always made a better roast, didn't she?

Gil Nault - Judy Mcgraw and I bet you had your Sunday clothes on too like me

Fran Urquhart - Gil Nault true

Judy Mcgraw - Gil Nault yes and shiny patent leather shows that Daddy shined for us each Sat night. We usually ate that yummy dinner while still in our Sunday clothes. How about you ?!?

Mary Jo Palmer - Judy Wonderful Sundaywas the same at our home. So miss those days! Still try, but something is missing🀷‍♀️ I think it's my Mom and DadπŸ₯²

Everill Conroy - Mary Jo Palmer I agree

Don Johnson - Judy Mcgraw my favorite meal by far!

Jody Uhlitzsch - Judy Mcgraw us too

Troy Greene - Judy Mcgraw my Mom did the same. Only sometimes it was a chicken or whatever we had. And we all sat at the table to eat. And I think that is something missing from our world today. It was a time to talk, a time to give thanks and a time for family.

AN Jarman - Troy Greene agree

Jan Burgess - Judy Mcgraw that was the way I was raised also , except my mom did not put cabbage in the roast.

Judy Mcgraw - Jan Burgess That roasted in roast steam and a little of the meat browning broth, made the cabbage so soft and yummy. But the aroma , mostly cabbage smell, was the best part of the roast dinner...at least we kids thot so, as did my own kiddos thot when…

Julie Butterworth - Jan Burgess for sure

Cindy Davis - Jan Burgess neither did mine but, Sunday was always roast , carrots, & potatoes.

Judy Mcgraw - Cindy Davis yummy yummy...but as kids, we loved the roasted cabbage. Mother was always spraying around the house saying the cabbage created a long term smell...lol..

Christina Olsowsky - Judy Mcgraw same here. We fought oven the roasted whole onionsπŸ˜‹

Janice Marino-donnelly - Judy Mcgraw sounds good. We didn’t go to church cuz my mom was making her meatballs and gravy all day! And home made cavatelli

Judy Mcgraw - Janice Marino-donnelly does that sound like Italian dinners? Yummy, but my Mother was a from North Carolina so everything was either fried or cooked very slowly for a long time in the oven.

Janice Marino-donnelly - Yes Judy. My family is from Italy and that’s an Italian tradition. Every Sunday dinner is some kind of macaroni and home made sauce which we call gravy. Your meals sound good too.

Burt Foutz When we were at my mom's parents house. Almost always roast and potatoes, carrots, and I think onions. It was Grandpa's favorite. All plates were stacked in front of him and he would dish out the meat. Everything else got passed. Children were seen but not heard unless spoken to. Sounds harsh but he was old school. He passed away in 77 I believe, I was 19. Miss him.

Burt Foutz you had to dress up for dinner. And grandpa wanted you to chew everbite 20 times. And he passed in 78, we had just moved to Middletown.

Burt Foutz When I was younger my Dad always went to early mass on Sundays. Came home got us kids up for late mass and he would make Chilli for lunch. Then my Mom would fry chicken for supper every Sunday night. If we ate good at supper. Dad would let us have the chicken heart and qizzard. Then the rest of us kids got to take a piece of bread and soak it in the grease in the skillet. Lol

Kelley Farmer true story... and it was all good

Clem Jansen yes it was good. But was that chicken grease really good for us? Lol

Kelley Farmer going on 70 and still kicking...so far so good.

Kelley Farmer Yes!

William Owen I come from a family where children were seen not heard. It was fried chicken mashed potatoes and green beans almost every Sunday after Church.

William Owen That's how our family was too. I remember my Dad's Aunt and Uncle coming over and playing cards and him and my Dad would talk in German. Sure wish I knew then what I know now. I'd love to ask my Uncle questions about my Grandpa and how he…

William Owen me too

Burt Foutz still good etiquette to teach

Burt Foutz I remember being told " children are to be seen and not heard". Can you imagine saying that to a child today?

Marie Alver Schaefer someone needs to!!

Burt Foutz herd that a lot

Burt Foutz it was the same at my parents house too

Burt Foutz my mother told us when she was little, nearly a hundred years ago, no talking at table by children. No playing on Sunday.

Jean Kohler Rowe Sunday dinner was tradition! Special time for all our family.

Mary Lee Muir Nelson I remember Sunday dinners at my grandmothers’ houses. I wish I knew at the time how special it was. I miss those times.

Mary Lee Muir Nelson me to plus my Grandmother would tell me don't forget your quart of pickles that she had canned. I loved her pickles. Those are the days miss so much

Mary Lee Muir Nelson Me too Mary!

Mary Lee Muir Nelson I agree wish we still had them !!

Kathy Canfield you still can have those special Sunday dinners ...start your own and you too can be the one to create so many wonderful family memories ❤

Elaine Newman-Phelps True.....You have to start a new tradition of your own and stick with it...My grandchildren are always recalling those special times...

Mary Lee Muir Nelson agreed

Mary Lee Muir Nelson me too❤️

Mickey Iezzi Meyer always @ my grand parents ❤️

Mary Lee Muir Nelson Agree. Just doesn't happen in today's world.

Alayne Crane - Sunday lunch at our childhood dinner table was a big event. It was the only day of the week that we had Roast Beef or Roast Chicken with all the trimmings. We were a large family - 10 children and at varying ages often meant extra people sharing lunch with us - a smattering of best friends, boyfriends or girlfriends often swelled the number sharing our meal extensively. Sunday lunch was also the only day we got pudding, but the golden rule was you had to eat everything including vegetables in order to qualify. I was not a veggie fan at 10 years of age, but my best friend Joy would happily eat both hers and mine and the deal was I had to share my pudding with her. I loved those lunches, eating delicious food and surrounded by family. Lots of conversation and feeling full and happy at the end of it. A snooze in the afternoon for the adults and forced rest for boisterous children. Late in the afternoon Raiding the fridge for a choice leftover slice of cold chicken or beef and a cold roast potato if you were lucky enough. A walk after rest time, Mom and Dad holding hands like young lovers and their brood all clamoring to hold the free hand of each parent. Showing off by racing a sibling to the shouts of encouragement from parents and older siblings. What precious memories now 55 years later which bring a mingling of nostalgia and love and deep contentment of belonging to a precious family.

Cathy Granita Still do about 2x a month! It isn’t always a big dinner. It might be pizza, picnic food or a big dinner. It isn’t about the food for us. It’s about catching up with each other, hearing about new things and just spending time together! We are all very blessed that we live close enough to be able to do this!

Anne Mayeu Goodness - Yes!! Dinner @1 after church and Sunday school. Usually chicken or a roast, mashed potatoes. Evening was sandwiches or whatever you wanted....and popcorn for snack watching Wonderful World of Disney!

Anne Mayeu Goodness <sigh>. Those were the days. . . .  Yes it was and it’s not what we ate but it was a time for everyone to sit down together as a family and actually talk to each other without looking at a phone!

Anne Bryant Segars or a tv. I believe in sitting at a table away from the tv. People don’t like to do that anymore apparently.

Judy Dillingham Briggs no they don’t. The world might be a better place if everyone would try.

Anne Bryant Segars sometimes sitting at the dinner table at night was the only time we really had to connect.

Judy Dillingham BriggsYes, away from the tv and cell phone!

Judy Dillingham Briggs that is so true!!

Anne Bryant Segars looking at the phones!!πŸ˜₯πŸ˜₯

Claudia Meade grrr,

Anne Bryant Segars the phone lights my fire!!

Joyce Curbo I love my phone too . But I do put it away when my husband and I sit down together for a meal guess you could say that’s how we were raised to have family time

Anne Bryant Segars , just enjoy your husband!

Anne Bryant Segars That's so true Anne.

Anne Bryant Segars AMEN !!

Anne Bryant Segars amen

Kevin Falle - The whole day pretty much meant something everything was pretty much closed except for the churches and a few other things. It was a day for family visits Sunday supper , Walt Disney . Basically it was a day that stood out as it was meant to be.

Micheline Syvret

Kevin Falle sure was Kev
