Lawyers/Democrats

Was forwarded this -- it is worth reading and thinking about:

Lawyers

As an attorney, I hesitated to forward this as it can be an indictment against my profession.  But I believe there is much truth to the article below.  Very thought provoking.  Lawyers are adversarial and are trained to try to win at all costs.  It may work in litigation but does not work well when governing our nation.  Trying to win at any costs creates the polarization and hatred that now fills our country and leaves no room for common sense or legitimate debate.

Every Democrat presidential nominee since 1984 went to law school, although Gore did not graduate.  Joe Biden (no surprise) was at the bottom of his class.  Every Democrat vice presidential nominee since 1976, except for Lloyd Bentsen, went to law school.  Barack Obama was a lawyer.  Michelle Obama was a lawyer.  Hillary Clinton was a lawyer.  Bill Clinton was a lawyer.  John Edwards is a lawyer.  Elizabeth Edwards was a lawyer.  Look at leaders of the Democrat Party in Congress: Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer is a lawyer.  Former Senator Harry Reid was a lawyer.

The Republican Party is different.  President Trump was a businessman.  Presidents Bush 1 and 2 were businessmen.  Vice President Cheney was a businessman.  President Eisenhower was a 5 star General.  The leaders of the Republican Revolution: Newt Gingrich was a history professor.  Tom Delay was an exterminator.  Dick Armey was an economist.  Ex-House Minority Leader John Boehner was a plastics manufacturer.  The former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is a heart surgeon.  Who was the last Republican president who was a lawyer?  Gerald Ford, who left office 31 years ago and who barely won the Republican nomination as a sitting president, running against actor Ronald Reagan in 1976.  The Republican Party is made up of real people doing real work, who are often the targets of lawyers.  This is very interesting. I had never thought about it this way before.

The Democrat Party is made up of lawyers.  Democrats mock and scorn men who create wealth, like Trump, Bush, and Cheney, or who heal the sick like Frist, or who immerse themselves in history like Gingrich.  The Lawyers Party sees these sorts of people, who provide goods and services that people want, as the enemies of America.  And so, in the eyes of the Lawyers Party, we have seen the procession of official enemies grow.  Against whom do Hillary and Obama rail?  Pharmaceutical companies, oil companies, hospitals, manufacturers, fast food restaurant chains, large retail businesses, bankers, and anyone producing anything of value in our nation.

This is the natural consequence of viewing everything through the eyes of lawyers.  Lawyers solve problems by successfully representing their clients, which, in this case should be the American people.  Lawyers seek to have new laws passed, they seek to win lawsuits, they press appellate courts to overturn precedent, and lawyers always parse language to favor their side.  Confined to the narrow practice of law, that is fine.  But it is an awful way to govern a great nation.

When politicians, as lawyers, begin to view some Americans as clients and other Americans as opposing parties, then the role of the legal system in our life becomes all-consuming.  Some Americans become adverse parties of our very government.  We are not all litigants in some vast social class-action suit.  We are citizens of a republic that promises us a great deal of freedom from laws, from courts, and from lawyers.

Today, we are drowning in laws.  We are contorted by judicial decisions.  We are driven to distraction by omnipresent lawyers in all parts of our once private lives.  America has a place for laws and lawyers, but that place is modest and reasonable, not vast, and unchecked.  When the most important decision for our next president is whom, he will appoint to the Supreme Court, the role of lawyers and the law in America is too big.  When House Democrats sue America to hamstring our efforts to learn what our enemies are planning to do to us, then the role of litigation in America has become crushing.

Perhaps Americans will understand that change cannot be brought to our nation by those lawyers who already largely dictate American society and business.  Perhaps Americans will see that hope does not come from the mouths of lawyers but from personal dreams nourished by hard work.  Perhaps Americans will embrace the truth that more lawyers with more power will only make our problems worse.

The United States has 5% of the world's population and 66% of the world's lawyers!  Tort or legal reform legislation has been introduced in congress several times in the last several years to limit punitive damages in ridiculous lawsuits such as spilling hot coffee on yourself and suing the establishment that sold it to you and to limit punitive damages in huge medical malpractice lawsuits.  This legislation has been blocked from even being voted on by the Democrat Party.  When you see that 97% of the political contributions from the American Trial Lawyers Association go to the Democrat Party, then you realize who is responsible for our medical and product costs being so high

Some timely rains in SW Iowa

74º with "feel like" of 74º in Clarinda, IA at 1:00 pm Monday.

Last couple days we had showers and got about .10" rain each day.  Last night it stormed through the night and we ended up with about 1.85" this morning.  Sun is just coming out here at 1 pm.

Well, after a break for lunch and doing some trimming around the sidewalks it is now 82º with the sun beating down.

Discovered that the grass was really overgrown along the cement and bricks by the driveway.  Got it wipped back some.

.
Phyllis fixed some Alaskan Wild-Caught Salmon that we had gotten at Sam's Club for lunch to go along with the corn on the cob and some cucumbers-with-onions and fresh tomatoes.  Goooood!

Spent quite a bit of time yesterday scanning photos from a picture-book I started in 1959.  I had forgotten all about it, but when lamenting that I wish I had some of my old pictures, Phyllis brought up the fact that she had several of my old photo books in the safe downstairs.  Brought back a lot of memories -- I was just a junior in high school at the time.  When complete copying them and getting them organized into some sort of albums will post some of them.

Sang the song "Far Side Bank of Jordan" at church yesterday.  Patty Steckelberg, from Shenandoah, had come over to witness the event.  After church we went to the local Mexican place for lunch.  She was kind enough to bring some green beans, tomatoes & zucchini (and maybe some other vegetables).
Was a bit hot yesterday afternoon when I mowed the lawn, so donned the big straw hat that had gotten in Progresso, Mexico many years ago on one of the Appreciation Days there.  It did keep the sun off me.

Today was sister-in-law Vicki's birthday and visited briefly with her on the phone.  She and Don are doing "okay" and said that friends had brought in a birthday cake for her.   Also telephoned brother Roger to see if they had any damage from the high winds reported in Nebraska over the weekend.  Had seen on Facebook from a friend in Callaway, NE that huge, old trees in Morgan Park in Callaway were completely uprooted.  Reports of winds 80 to 100 miles per hour in some of Nebraska.  He said they did not have any damage at their place in Lincoln.

Will be getting the trailer ready to pull out this Friday, heading to State Center, Iowa.

Well, that does it for this post.  LC

Visit to Kansas

91º with a "feel like" of 111º right now at 2:00 pm in Clarinda, IA on Friday afternoon.

Met our dear friends, Harold & LaRhoda Neher, in Highland, KS yesterday for lunch then went to their home near Hiawatha, KS for afternoon of visiting and, of course, some Pegs & Jokers.

Of course, the Neher's were our next-door neighbors for many years in Texas before they had to quit coming south in the winter.

I picked a small sack of apples from one of their trees.

Though LaRhoda was "giving up gardening" this year, her daughter set up a small cattle trough beside their garage and she has a few things in it.  Close to the house and no stooping!

We got in four games and the guys won just one more than the women!

Took the posed photo that led off this blog and will print it to show all our Kenwood friends at the Summer Rally next week in State Center, IA.

Today Phyllis has been working up the apples gotten from Kansas as well as peaches we bought in Gravity, Iowa on Tuesday.

When we were on our last trip with the travel trailer, leaving Columbia, MO , I discovered a leak on the outer side of the valve for the grey water tank.  I put some "super tape" on it, but found when emptying tank at Marengo, IA it still had a bit of a leak.  Have added a bit more today.  Maybe this "Miles Cobble" will do the job.

We were gone from the trailer one day during the week at the Starvy Creek Bluegrass Festival and when we returned around 11 pm that night a couple neighbors informed us they had shut off our propane as could smell it.  Used an electric gizmo for what little cooking we did the rest of that trip.  When got home I bought a "propane detector" and determined it was around the short hoses leading from the tanks to the regulator.  Got a new set and put them on this morning -- before it got quite so hot!

More later, LC

PS: It is now 5:15 pm - just looked at weather here - reported 91º with a "feel like" of 121º

Nothing much new going on other than the weather.

Bridal Shower Weekend

79º overcast with a rain that just went through -- very muggy -- in Clarinda, IA at 2:30 pm Tuesday.

Last Friday we took the travel trailer and drove to Winterset, IA where we got rid of almost $20 worth of pop cans at a recycling place, then proceeded to Des Moines, stopping at Costco for gas and then had one of Phyllis' hearing aids worked on and got the famous Costco foot-long hot dog & drink for $3.16 total, including tax for the both of us..

On to Sudbury Motel & Campground in Marengo, IA.  Set up trailer and then back to Cam & Pat's place where Granddaughter Emily, Granddaughter Ashley with husband Heath and kids Jessica and David were.  Also, friend of Emily's, Joy from Bowling Green, KY was there; she will be Emily's Bridesmaid in her September wedding.  Patty, Ashley, Joy, & Emily were working on getting their place ready for the Bridal Shower the next day on Saturday.  Pictured at left are the ladies from Phyllis' side of the family.
Photo at right is of the Miles & Baze families.  These photos were in the afternoon when almost 20 women gathered for the shower.  Patty's sister Pam, from Kansas and her sister Jenny from Omaha were there as well as Pam's two daughters and two granddaughters from Omaha.
At left are sisters Ashley, Emily, with Joy (bridesmaid) and Ashley's daughter Jessica.

In photo at right is Emily with her future Mother-In-Law on the left and Grandmother-In-Law on the right.

To avoid attending the "ladies only" event, I and son Cam went to Cedar Rapids for lunch then to a movie -- first time I have been in a movie house for 15 or 20 years--where we saw the very sobering movie Sound of Freedom.  It closely follows a true story of children being kidnapped and forced to be sex slaves.
This crime is in the top three list of crimes worldwide, expecting to exceed drug crimes
as the most serious.   See it if you have a chance.  Theater had leather recliners--first for me.

Following three pictures are from
pizza supper Friday evening.

Photo at right shows Phyllis playing with Patty's sister Pam's granddaughters from Omaha.

Saturday afternoon Cam spent time with the three young girls at the swing from tree in their back yard.

Saturday evening making Taco Salads.

We returned to Clarinda Sunday where I mowed the yard and found another billion Cottonwood seeds!

July 19, 2023

Bright sunshine and 84º with a "feels like" of 90º here in Clarinda, IA at 3:15 pm on Wednesday.  That beats the 100º with a "feels like" of 116º at our home in La Feria, Texas right now!

Had crew out today to re-align our rain gutters and add a covering similar to Gutter Dome.  The very long runs had been a screw-up ever since we bought this place.  The really long run across front of house and the really long run across back of the house have been changed to high point in the middle and drain to both ends.  That, plus the coverings should eliminate much gutter problems.

Anyone who wants to start a Cottonwood Forest are welcome to come harvest some of the million cottonwood seeds that are blowing around our yard!

Will be getting ready to pull the trailer east this Friday.  We returned to our trailer from Branson to the Starvy Creek Bluegrass Festival last week one day and were informed that neighbors had shut off our propane account the smell of it around our trailer.  We used an electric hotplate for our cooking (one which we have carried in the trailer for some time, but not used) and when home secured a tester for the smell of propane.  Have been unable to detect anything, but will test it before we leave and when we get to Marengo.  Also, discovered a leak just past our drain valve for the grey water tank and am going to try to get it fixed before heading east.  At least if it leaks when draining the tanks is not as serious if it was the black tank.

Is overcast now at 4:30 pm Wednesday with temperature at 83º with "feels like" of 89º/  Yes, I got sidetracked and just got back to the computer.

A little shower today

78º and bright sunshine at 6:36 pm Tuesday. Rained from early morning until nearly noon today.  I dumped .5" of rain from the gauge after lunch.   Grass is growing like crazy -- mowed the yard today.

Flowers on west side of house in spot of a removed tree--several years ago.

Flowers in big pots on back deck.

One of my 80th birthday cards. And, the "Life Begins at 80" below is from her (Bobbi) since she is over 80 I have to believe it is true.

Life Begins at 80

I have good news for you. The first 80 years are the hardest. The second are a succession of birthday parties.

Once you reach 80, everyone wants to carry your baggage and help you up the steps. If you forget your name or anybody else's name, or an appointment, or your own telephone number, or promise to be three places at the same time, or can’t think of how many grandchilden you have, you need only explain that you are 80 years old.

Being 80 is a lot better than being 70. At 70 people are mad at you for everything. At 80 you have a perfect excuse no matter what you do. If you act foolishly, it’s your second childhood. Everyboedy is looking for symptoms of softening of the brain.

Being 70 is no fun at all. At that age they expect you to retire to a house in Florida and complain about your arthritis (they used to call it lumbago) and you ask everyone to stop mumbling because you can’t understand them. (Actually, your hearing is about 50% gone).

If you survive until you are 80, everybody is surprised that you are still alive. They treat you with respect just for having lived so long. Actually, they seem surprised that you can walk and talk sensibly.

So please, folks, try to make it to 80. It’s the best time of life. People forgive you for anything. If you ask me, life begins at 80.

Well, after numerous texts, first that I was on-call for jury duty, then that I was to report July 18th (today), called in - as instructed - last evening and was told case was solved, no need for jury.  Will be on call for rest of the month.

It did let me keep my appointment to donate blood to the Red Cross at noon today.

Later, LC

Rainy day in Clarinda, IA

73º and sunshine at 7:00 pm here in Clarinda, IA Monfsy, after rain early this morning.

"The trouble with the world is not that people know too little; it's that they know so many things that just aren't so." ~ Mark Twain.

Dixie Henry (now G'Schwind) was a few years behind me at Lower Lodi Grade School near Oconto, NE many years ago. She has been secretary at the Methodist Church in Callaway, Nebraska for 29 1/2 years and her retirement was noted on Facebook.

Another two pictures off Facebook - My oldest brother Roger's grandson Steve with his daughters -- Mila and Emma -- in Santorini, Greece and Alberobello, Italy

Well, as sometime happens, I got distracted last night. It is now 8:30 am on Tuesday. Though I had been called for Jury Duty this morning, last night's phone call let me know it was cancelled.

Is 64 degrees with light rain falling - forecast for rain off & on most of the day.

Had lunch near Kansas City last Thursday for some $24 less than one of the dine-in meals in Cape Girardeau, MO.  Always enjoy the Costco Hot Dogs
Lawn really growing with rains we have
had lately.  Mowed last Thursday and
will have to mow tomorrow.
