Cold and rainy in the Valley

45º with light rain here in La Feria, TX at 12 noon Wednesday.

This was the temperature yesterday morning -- not really cold, but sure cold for this area.  Also had heavy rain and 15-20 mph winds,.  Hardly anyone out on the streets or their patios for some reason!

TV reported 2" in Harlingen, just a few miles east of us, but my rain gauge had 1.5" in it yesterday evening.  Is very definitely very soggy anywhere other than on cement or asphalt.

Yesterday morning I drove Phyllis to downtown La Feria where she got her hair cut.  I stayed in the pickup and went through my Men of A-Chord songs.  As we were leaving, a long string of sugar cane harvesters and the wagons came up the street.

The sugar cane mill is about 7 miles north of us; don't know if they were taking them there account of the rain, or just moving to different fields.

Then we drove about 16 miles to San Benito, TX for a doctors appointment.

After a quick bite of lunch at home I drove over to Snow to Sun RV park and drove Bob Weise's car over to McAllen, some 30 miles to the west, for Men of A-Chord practice.  We took, for the first time, a neighbor of Bob's - Dave-think last name is Miller, but that might not be right - he is at the left in photo below.
The three baritones

I planted seeds to tomato plants last October 27th.

Two days ago, when they were a couple or three inches tall, I moved them over into a larger planter box.

Went out to put some fertilizer on them yesterday and this is what I found.  Small piece of one leaf.  Not a trace of anything else.  Don't know if they died and shrivled up immediately, or if something ate them off--no tracks.  Anyway, I planted some more seeds right in this box.  Guess I wasted the last couple weeks!

We were going to Mexico tomorrow for another fitting for Darlene's new plate; but, I have a special barbershop chorus practice coming up in McAllen, so Phyllis & Darlene are going to borrow Joyce Holder's car and go down there so I have the pickup to make my practice.

Looks like sunny and mostly sunny for next Tues-Wed when we fly out.
Loris & Gail Barsanti in their home in Rosser, Manitoba, CA in 2015

I had written to Loris Barsanti asking how they were doing and this is part of the e-mail we got yesterday:
"We have sold our motor home and Jeep.  Then we bought an older park model in Mesa.  We are at this time in Towerpoint in Mesa.  We have friends from Winnipeg and area staying at Mesa Regal next door.   Then we sold our home in Rosser and have moved into an apartment in Winnipeg.  The complex is run by the Kinsmen.  We are adapting to the new life style and enjoying the actual freedom it gives us.  We still go to the church in Rosser.  You just can't take all of the country out of us."
Gail had some serious health problems a few years ago, but he does not mention them now, so assume she is doing fine.  Quite a change for them.
