Happy New Year!

78 degrees with bright sunshine and 15 mph wind out of the south here in La Feria, TX at 3:00 pm Sunday, New Years Eve.

Attended church in Harlingen this morning along with Darlene Winslow.  Have a few weeks off from the choir account director is on a vacation to family in the northeast US.

Darlene -- Theresa and Bill Van Oenen joined us

and went to Roosters Country Cafe on the very western edge of Harlingen -- within a few blocks of La Feria on Business 83 Highway.

Well, we have done a lot in 2023.  Performed in many concerts with Men & Women of A-Chord in the spring.  Attended many Bluegrass Festivals -- in Georgia, North Carolina, Missouri, and Nebraska.  Attended Cabbage Family Reunion in Arkansas. Visited our daughter in Ohio, our son and all his family in eastern Iowa.  Attended Granddaughter Emily marriage to Derek Schlegel in Marengo, IA in September.  Visited with brother Don and wife Vicki in Missouri a couple times.  Visited with Harold & LaRhoda Neher in Kansas a couple times.  Visited with Don & Lawrence Ferguson, Larry & Gail Ferguson and Helen Ferguson.  Spent one evening in Branson with Steve Baldridge and later saw him perform with his brothers at Shephard of the Hills theater.  Drove to Minneapolis, MN to visit with Bob & Bobi Raab and spent much of a week with other Kenwood RVer's at State Center, IA for annual Summer Rally.  Also, had our Clarinda house re-shingled this summer.  Had most of our family come to Clarinda in June to help me celebrate my 80th birthday.  Just a few weeks ago we spent a week driving to Florida & back after attending Funeral for my brother Darrell's wife.  Got to spend a few days with Darrell & Jonathon.

Hope all have a Happy & Prosperous New Year in 2024

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to friends & family

69º with bright sunshine here in La Feria, TX at 1:15 pm on Wednesday.  Click on photos to enlarge.

Looks like I haven't posted in a while.  These photos are from our attending Christmas Eve service with Darlene Winslow and we met at the church two of our park neighbors Bill & Teresa Van Onen from Ontario, Canada.  They are in photo below.

We had attended the combined church service at First Methodist Church of Harlingen in the morning.  The 9 am and 11 am services were combined in one.  We did sing in the choir at that service.

After church Sunday morning we went to La Feria Cafe where I had a Burrito Plate with Carne Guisada (Stewed beef), served with rice & beans
It was delicious, but huge -- Photo at left, and that is a BIG plate.  I had three more meals off it after eating a portion at the Cafe.   Will order this again, but we will split one.

Joe, the Veggie Man, had a good turn out for his really fresh vegetables.

Had 50-some residents gather for Christmas Dinner Monday Noon.  (Some argue it was Lunch, but for me noon is Dinner and evening is Supper--lunch is something mid-afternoon that was brought out to the hay field or ranch when we were working cattle)

Park management provided turkey, ham, potatoes and gravy and the residents brought side dishes, which cover the two tables in photo at left.

At left is framed colored drawing made by Cody Haar in our park. He presented it to Phyllis before the Christmas Dinner.  He is a 32 year old special needs kid that visits his parents for several weeks around Christmas.  He does excellent drawings with his colored pencils.  He will be leaving in a few weeks, flying back to his folks place in  Bowdle, South Dakota where an uncle will oversee him.  He has a part time job cleaning in an office building that also occupies his time.

Played a couple games of Shuffleboard Tuesday before we went to barbershop chorus practice.  The man on the left in the phot is Cody that was referred to above.

Photo at left

was taken yesterday after I gathered the flowers in that vase from our back yard.

As you can see in the photo at right, I guess I can get a 5th wheel and pull it without removing the cover off the back of our pickup.

Back in the Rio Grande Valley

71º and overcast here in La Feria, TX at 11:15 am this Friday morning with high of 77º forecast.

We got back to our Texas home Wednesday about 4:15 pm after 420 miles of driving that day. Had put in 560 on Tuesday and 300 miles on Monday after attending the committal service that noon.

Photo at left is one I took from the video of Lin's Celebration of Life on Saturday.  Darrell & Jonathon performed with the Handbell Choir.

Click on any photo to enlarge.

Yesterday Phyllis worked with the quilting ladies in the morning and in the afternoon we drove to McAllen, TX to pick up the red and black vests for the barbershop group Men & Women of A-Chord.

On the way back home we stopped at Doris Winter's place for a visit.  She is flying to Minnesota this evening to surprise her older sister for her 90th birthday this weekend, and be with some of her family for Christmas.

Some 59 residents of the park have signed up for the Christmas Dinner on Monday.  Phyllis & I will sing with the First Methodist Church of Harlingen Choir on Sunday morning and attend Christmas Eve service there that evening.

Merry Christmas to all.............and a Happy New Year.

The demise of Glenn Miller

 Friday, December 15, 1944:

“We can only imagine what was going through (Major Glenn) Miller’s mind at this critical moment in the uncomfortable C-64 cabin. He would be very alarmed if he witnessed an argument.

“(Flight Officer Stuart) Morgan now faced the most important decision of his young life. By 14:55A, the combination of freezing temperature and higher relative humidity building up after ten minutes over water would begin to weigh upon the airframe and engine of the low-flying and fuel-heavy C-64. Immediate evasive action was required. At 1,500ft he could safely turn the aircraft back toward the English coast, although he had to be very careful about his sink rate. In a turn, Morgan could unwittingly fly the aircraft right into the water. He could probably see nothing at this point except gray sky and no clear horizon. A pilot in such conditions could become spatially disoriented and simply auger into the sea without realizing it. Flying low over the icy waters of the English Channel in deteriorating conditions with (Lt. Col. Norman) Baessell distracting him, Morgan was challenged as never before to maintain situational awareness.

“In another five minutes at 15:00A, Morgan would have less than thirty miles to go before reaching dry land. He was taking his chances about disciplinary action, although the more pressing issue was simply completing a safe crossing. Mogan had to find a secure place to land before darkness if he could not land at Villacoublay, which did not have a beam (instrument) approach. Orly had a beam approach, but Morgan had never attempted to land at A-47 using the instrument system. If Orly or Le Bourget were not available, he would have great difficulty visually locating an unfamiliar alternate airfield within reasonable range and weather conditions in the dark. As he anxiously considered his options, time ran out. Abruptly and without warning, everything catastrophically changed.

“It was within moments of 15:00 BST (GMT+1). C-64 44-70285 had been airborne underneath low overcast and above the English Channel directly on course via the Langney Point-St. Valery air corridor between England and France, between thirty and forty miles south of Langney Point and twenty-six to thirty-six miles north of St. Valery.”

Good Ole "Hoss"

Dan Blocker (December 10, 1928 – May 13, 1972) was born on this date 95 years ago. He is best remembered for his role as Hoss Cartwright in the NBC western television series Bonanza.

Blocker was born Bobby Dan Davis Blocker in De Kalb in Bowie County in northeastern Texas, son of Ora Shack Blocker (1895–1960) and his wife Mary Davis Blocker (1901–1998). The family moved to O'Donnell, south of Lubbock in West Texas, where they operated a store.
As a boy he attended Texas Military Institute, and in 1946 played football at Baptist-affiliated Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. In 1947, he transferred to and later graduated from Sul Ross State Teacher's College in Alpine, where he was a star football player and then went on to earn a master's degree in the dramatic arts.
Blocker was a high school English and drama teacher in Sonora, Texas; a sixth-grade teacher and coach at Eddy Elementary School in Carlsbad, New Mexico; and finally, a teacher in California. He had worked as a rodeo performer and as a bouncer in a beer bar while a student. He is remembered from his school days for his size of 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) and weight of 300 pounds (140 kilograms; 21 stone 6 pounds), and for being good-natured despite his intimidating size.
Blocker was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. He had basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He served as an infantry sergeant in F Company, 2nd Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division in Korea, December 1951 to August 1952. He received a Purple Heart for wounds in combat according to the June/July 2013 issue of VFW Magazine.
In 1957, Blocker appeared in a Three Stooges short, Outer Space Jitters, having portrayed the part of "The Goon," billed as "Don Blocker". Dan Blocker made two appearances on the long-running Gunsmoke series: the first on August 25, 1956, in "Alarm at Pleasant Valley" and the second on October 18, 1958, in "Thoroughbreds". He also appeared in 1957 as Will in the episode, "A Time to Die" of the ABC/Warner Brothers western series, Colt .45, starring Wayde Preston.[3]
Blocker was cast in 1957 in episodes of the David Dortort-produced NBC series, The Restless Gun as a blacksmith and as a cattleman planning to take his hard-earned profit to return to his family land in his native Minnesota. That same year, he had at least two roles as a bartender in an episode of the syndicated western-themed crime drama Sheriff of Cochise, starring John Bromfield and in the film, Gunsight Ridge. Also in 1957, he appeared in an episode, "Land Beyond the Law", of Cheyenne, playing one of the outlaw minions (Pete). He also appeared in The Rifleman. In 1958, he played a prison guard and later had a recurring role as Tiny Budinger in the NBC western series Cimarron City, starring George Montgomery, John Smith, and Audrey Totter. He also was seen in "The Señorita Makes a Choice," a 1958 episode of Walt Disney's Zorro series.
In 1958, Blocker had a supporting role as Sergeant Broderick in "The Dora Gray Story" on NBC's Wagon Train, with Linda Darnell in the title role and Mike Connors as Miles Borden, a corrupt United States Army lieutenant at an isolated western fort. That same year, he appeared in "Stagecoach Episode" of the NBC western, Jefferson Drum, starring Jeff Richards.
Blocker was cast as bearded poker-playing rodeo performer, Cloudy Sims, in the 1958 episode "Rodeo" on the David Janssen crime drama, Richard Diamond, Private Detective. In the story line, a rodeo performer named Ed Murdock, portrayed by Lee Van Cleef, is murdered before he can make his final performance at the annual event in Madison Square Garden.
In 1959, as Bonanza began its long network run, Blocker guest-starred in an episode of the Keenan Wynn and Bob Mathias NBC series, The Troubleshooters, an adventure program about unusual events surrounding an international construction company. Another 1959 role was as Del Pierce in "Johnny Yuma", the first episode of the ABC western series, The Rebel, starring Nick Adams.
Blocker's big break also came in 1959, when he was cast as Hoss Cartwright on the long-running NBC television series Bonanza, and played the role until his death. Blocker said he portrayed the Hoss character with a Stephen Grellet excerpt in mind: "We shall pass this way on Earth but once, if there is any kindness we can show, or good act we can do, let us do it now, for we will never pass this way again."[6]
In 1968, Blocker starred with Frank Sinatra in the "Tony Rome" film sequel Lady In Cement.
Stanley Kubrick attempted to cast Blocker in his film Dr. Strangelove, after Peter Sellers elected not to add the role of Major T.J. "King" Kong to his multiple other roles, but according to the film's co-writer, Terry Southern, Blocker's agent rejected the script. The role subsequently went to Slim Pickens, who played the iconic scene of riding an atomic bomb down while waving his cowboy hat. In 1970, Blocker portrayed a love-shy galoot in Cockeyed Cowboys of Calico County, with Nanette Fabray as a love prospect and a supporting cast featuring Jim Backus, Jack Elam, Noah Beery, Jr., and Mickey Rooney. Blocker also appeared on NBC's The Flip Wilson Show comedy hour.
Director Robert Altman befriended Blocker while directing episodes of Bonanza. Years later, he cast Blocker as Roger Wade in The Long Goodbye, but Blocker died before filming began. The role went to Sterling Hayden, and the film was dedicated to Blocker.
Blocker received partial ownership in a successful chain of Ponderosa/Bonanza Steakhouse restaurants in exchange for serving (in character as Hoss) as their commercial spokesman and making personal appearances at franchises.
On May 13, 1972, Blocker died in Los Angeles at age 43 of a pulmonary embolism following gall bladder surgery. The writers of Bonanza took the unusual step of referencing a major character's death in the show's storyline that autumn. Bonanza lasted another season without Hoss, as the 14th and final season ended on January 16, 1973.
Blocker's remains are interred in a family plot in Woodsmen Cemetery, in DeKalb, Texas, although he had lived there only briefly. The common grave site is marked by a plain stone with the name "BLOCKER" engraved; three family members are buried beside him.
A "Dan Blocker Room" is on the second floor of the O'Donnell Heritage Museum in O'Donnell, Texas, where he was reared.

Driving from South Texas to northern Florida

52º here in Crestview, FL at 9:45 pm on Wednesday evening.  Long day on the road.  Ran in rain for some time this morning, then just heavy overcast the rest of the day and until we got here a little after 8 pm when it was dark as dark could be.   We are on the very eastern edge of Central time, which accounted for the early dark.  Will be in Eastern Time in about a hundred miles in the morning.  Drove just under 700 miles today, coming from Bay City, Texas; and just under 300 miles Tuesday afternoon La Feria, TX to Bay City, TX.

Got Darlene Winslow's house opened up for her, changed out water filter, turned on propane and got the house warmed up for.

Picked up Darlene from the plane about 4 pm Monday.  Realize now I didn't get any photo of her.

She is walking slower, but for an 87-year old having had several falling incidences she is getting along.

Much of the parking area immediately across from the departure/arrival terminals at the airport now have new shade over them.

Took several shots while at our Men & Women of A-Chord practice on Tuesday and have labeled most of them.  Click on photo to enlarge to view.

Spend part of our practice on the risers each week.  We were missing quite a few on Tuesday and the practice seemed a little less than enthusiastic.  We will miss next week's practice as will several others who are travelling for Christmas.

Well, have something around 365 miles tomorrow and should be at my brother Darrell's place by early afternoon.  Lin's funeral service on Saturday morning, at 11 am Eastern Time, will be at Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg, FL.

Will have only 365 miles tomorrow to Leesburg, FL and looking forward to spending time with Darrell & Jonathan.

More later, Lynn
