Cool, cool, cool

63º here in Kenwood at 11:13 am on Wednesday with a really cool north wind blowing.  Cool front came in Sunday evening and got really seriously cool Monday.  We rode the trikes about 4 miles this morning and are in getting warmed up now.

Have worked up to 20 miles per day - at least have done it two days now.  Not all in one ride, think was 4 different times yesterday.

Have gotten a dozen grape sized tomatoes or so from plants

Have pretty much trimmed the very tall bougainvillea plant in the back yard.  We planted it some 8 or 9 years ago and this is the first time trimmed back.

Brought some of the flowers in for Phyllis and also took some to neighbors Neher's and Finken's.

 On Sunday evenings we try to catch Rory Feek and his daughter Indiana on RFD-TV at 8:00 pm Central.  His life story (or at least some of it) he and  his wife Joy had a music life and lots of TV performances.  Several years ago, their daughter was born with Downs Syndrome and at the same time Joy was diagnosed with cancer.  She died 2 years later.  You can catch many of their earlier programs on TV at times.  Check out his web page at HERE

Sunset one recent evening

Phyllis had been in touch with her first cousin Anita Kuhlman Snook for some time about the fact that her brother, Les, had contracted the Covid-19 and was in a hospital in Sterling, Colorado where he lived.  He had been traveling abroad in early March.  Was in ICU for many days and finally passed April 11th.  We had visited him and his wife Jo several times as we went to Colorado to see Phyllis' sister.  These two photos are the last time we saw them, I think, in 2016.  She had had a stroke and was having mental acuity problems and had been confined to a nursing home.  Les would see her many times a day when he was home.  She, of course, was not allowed to see him in the hospital and is having a hard time understanding what has happened.

This photo was taken, I assume, sometime in the early 1960's.  Phyllis' Mom's Sister Mary Ruth is at the right side of photo.  She passed away in the mid 1960's from cancer.
We bought the house they are in front of from Les, Anita and Rhoda's dad Bill in 1971 and lived there for 38 years.

Rhoda passed away several years ago, as did their father Bill.



Nothing exciting going on here.  Waiting until the Covid-19 thing settles down before we head north.

Hot, hot and hot

My Weather Underground program recorded 99º for La Feria at 3:00 pm.  Photo at right was taken at 2:30 pm and it had been at 98.2 just prior to that.   TV Weather Guy said Harlingen - maybe 6 miles east - recorded a record high of 103º today.   It is much better inside at the 77º.

 Watched our home-town church services over the internet this Easter Morning.  Afterwards, watched much of the Service from Morrison United Methodist Church - Leesburg, FL and got to watch/listen to nephew Jonathon Miles sing and play trumpet as part of the service.

Third flat tire on my recumbent trike in the last week.  Each wheel had a chance to get in on it.  I have been trimming Bougainvillea bushes and a lot of other trimmings has been going on in the park and some of the little twigs with thorns on them are n the streets.  Avoid them as I see them, but not all of them.  One of the flats was on the inside (rim side) of the tube - no protruding spoke, so not sure what caused that one.

Not a lot of plant left of these two tomato plants, but have been getting a few grape tomatoes off them.  Still using grow lights and leaving them inside the Texas room to keep the black birds away from them.

Planted some more of the Juliet tomato seeds today, if we ever go north to Iowa, will take them with me --- or just let them grow here if we don't go north (waiting out the movement restrictions account the Covid-19 Virus.

Advice from An Old Farmer

Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

Keep skunks at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.

More time in Texas

82º with heavy overcast here in La Feria, TX at 1:30 pm Friday

Got .35" of rain overnight, though we didn't hear it rain.  Forecast was for some hail and hard storms to the west of us, though haven't heard of any damage, etc.

When cleaning up the trimmings from the bushes in the back yard I discovered I was standing in a mound of red ants.  This was a couple days ago and they left some definite marks.

       Have had three ducks flying around in the park lately.  A bit unusual.

Made a trip to the grocery store yesterday, with masks and latex gloves.  99 out of 100 people did have on face masks -- as required by law in our county now account Covid-19.

 

Wonder how much cheaper gas will get?

Last many days have been riding trike within the park - put on 18 miles for 4 days, then 19, then 13, and 18 - will try to add to the 8 miles I rode this morning this afternoon.




Left our home in Clarinda, IA on October 11th last year. Spent some time visiting relatives and doing some sight-seeing on the way down here to our Texas home and arrived October 20th.  So--we left our north home 6 months ago tomorrow.  Wonder when the Coronovirus thing will let up and we can head north.

Slow time

89º right now at 2:30 pm Wednesday afternoon here in Kenwood RV, La Feria, TX.  Been hot and humid.  This weekend, though we had cool spell -- in the 60's

Pretty exciting week - with no leaving the park, mostly riding the recumbent trike.  Have cleaned up some of the bushes in the back, and the years of accumulation of the leaves and seeds where we park the pickup.

Sunday was my Oldest Brother Roger & wife Carolyn's 61st Wedding Anniversary.  Got this photo off Facebook that their daughter Angie put on.  Looks like they are doing well.

Our city of La Feria just made proclamation that all will wear face masks, even home-made, whenever in  public areas.

Maybe rain tonight

79º at 9:30 here in La Feria, TX.  Humid - clouds to the west this afternoon and we are promised rain sometime tonight.  Very, Very dry here.  Weatherman on Channel 4 said we could have a 5 inch slow rain and not have any runoff other than the cement roads.

Brownsville is 30 miles south east of us.

Took this while riding my recumbent trike today -- put on 15.5 miles.  Last two days rode 12 miles each day.

Finished taking the leaves off the older roof.  Still have a little to clean off the newer roof to the north.  The gloves I am using were Cousin Kent Miles' gloves -- Karen gave them to me last December when we were in San Diego.

Had two flats at same time!  Guess it could have been 3

Hardly any traffic while peddling.







Looking back at April photos for the last 10 years and we were never still in Kenwood this late.  Usually have plans for several stops, and where to park the trailer, etc.  But, everything is up in the air and we are just in suspension now.  Should have gone to Iowa a month ago as things are tightening up on travel, for the Covid-19 Virus now.  Here in Cameron County, where we live, positive Covid-19 Virus cases has risen to 50.  Sheriff's office and other law enforcement are to stop anyone with 3 or more in a car.  And, any can be stopped and if not on an essential trip to Work, Doctor, Pharmacy, or Grocery Store are being fined $1,000 and sent back home.
