Warm sunny weekend

Still no rain - promised some nearly every day -- getting very dry.  79º with all the windows open -- 3:00 pm Sunday.  Have had windows open for several days; in fact, one window was really open:
Old window by kitchen table out.

New window in place.
Replaced the window by the kitchen table.  This double-walled insulated window will be much easier to open than the old ones built in this place nearly 30 years ago.

Window with trim on inside.

Saw Kody Norris Show at Tropic Winds RV last night

Went to Granny Clare's Citrus stand Saturday and had some grapefruit shipped to our daughter, Michelle, in Ohio.  Freight runs 4 times the amount of the cost of the grapefruit, but it does get some fresh grapefruit to her,

We went to the Winter Texan Expo 2020 in McAllen earlier this month; and, the Welcome Back Winter Texans magazine published some pictures taken at the expo.  We were one of them!
Lowest we've paid for gasoline in a while.

Friday a bunch of the women went out to eat as "The Kenwood Sisters" - formerly the Red Hat Ladies (Someone bitched about them using the name but not being officially associated with the national Red Hat people- so they changed the name)  and some of the men went together to the La Feria Cafe for lunch.

As usual, Veggie man came Friday.

Men of A-Chord do not have a performance tonight - will have next Thursday.
Maybe later, Lynn

Tuesday evening

62º here in La Feria at 11:30 am on Monday.
Saturday evening we went with Dick and Deane Messer to RV Park near the airport in Harlingen to listen to the GoldWing Express show.  They are really entertaining and we are looking forward to our time with them and the other entertainers on our 7-day cruise starting the 8th of February out of Galveston.

65º and heavy overcast now at 11:00 am Tuesday.  Still waiting for that rain when we were promised 1 to 1.5" last weekend.  Didn't get a drop!  I got side tracked on this post, but will add some now, even if I don't get finished.

Tomatoes finally growing a bit.

Working on new post to support carport.

Working on base of Harold Neher's swivel rocker -- replacing the "lazy Susan" part.  You should have seen the little roller bearings roll out of the old one when took it off!

8:30 pm Tuesday - LaRhoda Neher  just left - had been most of the day at ER at Harlingen Hospital with Harold.  Harold did not have a room assigned yet, but was to get one when opened up.  Has congestive heart failure and AFIB.  He has only been home about a week from spending almost a month in hospital and rehab.  Hoping for best.

Phyllis & I went to Men of A-Chord practice this afternoon and, after dropping off the car-pool people at Snow to Sun RV we ate supper at Chick-fil-A in Weslaco.
.
Saturday we went to the new Harlingen Convention Center which is located near Sam's Club for a "Winter Texan Fiesta".  Worst 2 hours of my life--waited in line for half hour, then was so crowded inside that was impossible to move around.  Won't plan on going to this thing next year.

Better finally post this - later, Lynn

Waiting for the rain

80º and very humid here in La Feria, TX at 5:15 pm Saturday.  Supposed to rain this afternoon, but spotty and has gone around us.  Area is really dry.
I see it has been several days since blogged.

Went with Dick & Deane over to trade show in Mission one day this week.

Thursday morning I dropped Phyllis and Dick & Deane off at RV Park in Mission so Phyllis could book entertainment at their Showcase that day and then I went to a practice of the "Spare Parts" group from the barbershop chorus.

Pat Summers has some of the ramp built for Dave Engle who is in rehab right now.
Going to RV Park near the Harlingen Airport tonight to listen to the GoldWing Express.  Will be only time we will see them in the Valley this year, but will be on the Cruise with them in a few weeks.  Found that they are not coming back to the Valley after this year -- may mean no more music cruises.

Rain finally coming - this weekend

Is supposed to get to 85º this afternoon - is 75º now at 10:00 am but not windy.  We are dry here and read where much of the Hill Country in Texas is in severe drought with cattle having to be sold off.

Monday was our Gatti's Piza/bingo day in Harlingen.  Had almost 70 people attend.

I always run an extra card for Don, the caller.

A "selfie" our daughter, Michelle, in Columbus, Ohio, sent us.

We are going to Barbershop Chorus practice this afternoon in McAllen.

On this day in 1888, the so-called "Schoolchildren's Blizzard" kills 235 people, many of whom were children on their way home from school, across the Northwest Plains region of the United States. The storm came with no warning, and some accounts say that the temperature fell nearly 100 degrees in just 24 hours.
It was a Thursday afternoon and there had been unseasonably warm weather the previous day from Montana east to the Dakotas and south to Texas. Suddenly, within a matter of hours, Arctic air from Canada rapidly pushed south. Temperatures plunged to 40 below zero in much of North Dakota. Along with the cool air, the storm brought high winds and heavy snows. The combination created blinding conditions.
Most victims of the blizzard were children making their way home from school in rural areas and adults working on large farms. Both had difficulty reaching their destinations in the awful conditions. In some places, though, caution prevailed. Schoolteacher Seymour Dopp in Pawnee City, Nebraska, kept his 17 students at school when the storm began at 2 p.m. They stayed overnight, burning stockpiled wood to keep warm. The next day, parents made their way over five-foot snow drifts to rescue their children. In Great Plains, South Dakota, two men rescued the children in a schoolhouse by tying a rope from the school to the nearest shelter to lead them to safety. Minnie Freeman, a teacher in Nebraska, successfully led her children to shelter after the storm tore the roof off of her one-room schoolhouse. In other cases, though, people were less lucky. Teacher Loie Royce tried to lead three children to the safety of her home, less than 90 yards from their school in Plainfield, Nebraska. They became lost, and the children died of hypothermia. Royce lost her feet to frostbite.
In total, an estimated 235 people across the plains died on January 12. The storm is still considered one of the worst blizzards in the history of the area.
