In Cape Girardeau, MO

 66 degrees with overcast in Cape Girardeau, MO at 12:00 Noon on Saturday.

Drove the 460 miles from Clarinda on Thursday, arriving at this campground about 5:30 pm.  Had terrible amount of traffic around St. Louis with stop & go traffic for nearly an hour.  When through that drove in heavy rain which continued until I completed setup of the trailer.

    Visited a bit with brother Don & sister-in-law Vicki for a bit that evening.  Yesterday we took them out so Vicki could pick up new glasses and then went to couple stores to shop.  She was tired out from that so took them back to their apartment to rest for an hour or so and then we picked them up and went out to eat.  Will go back up to their place about 1:30 pm today and spend afternoon, probably playing dominoes or such, and then take them out to eat again.  Vicki is moving very slowly and tires easily.  She uses wheel chair around the apartment and walker when she goes out.

This photo is from Facebook when Don & Vicki went on an outing with group from the Chateau to visit a Garden.

Will try to get some current photos for next post.

Some cold weather in southern Iowa

 41º here in Clarinda at 9:45 am, with predicted high for the day of 51º.

As you can see, couple early mornings of below
freezing, especially Sunday morning.  Hope the
drained travel trailer doesn't have any damage.

Got new cards this winter.

Mowed the lawn couple days ago before we got 1.5" of rain.  Now with the rain it is looking good.  Of course, that means more mowing.  Have made arrangements for neighbor to mow, if needed, while we are going the next few weeks.
Since we moved here in June of 2010, I have twice-a-year cleaned the gutters of the shop building.  Is rather tall and as I am getting older it seems even taller.  Couple years ago I removed the gutter from the west side of the shop where it is under the Ash tree and was always getting a lot of stuff in the gutters.  That seemed to work well, so couple days ago I removed the one on the east side.  No more climbing up that ladder!

These are the few Peonies
we left on the east side
of the front yard.

Windy weather in Iowa

 80º with bright sunshine, wind out of SSE at 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph at 3:00 pm Friday afternoon.

Peonies still below the surface in this photo from April 2, 2023.

Peonies out of ground on April 11th in photo at right.

Photo at left April 12th.

And they are really growing now.  Real excitement, watching plants grow, heh?
The other day, when I had filled the Softub and plugged it in, it quit.  Discovered the GFCI was burned out -- ordered a new one, which got today and wired it in, cleaned the tub (after emptying it the other day wind had blown in a lot of debris) and refilled it and it is running now.  Should be warm enough to use tomorrow.

Yesterday we drove to Lincoln to spend some time with oldest brother Roger and his wife Carolyn.
Had an excellent meal and visit with them.

They had installed a stair lift this winter and it is making it a lot safer for them to go to the basement.  With age, things are slowing down a bit for them.

Will make another post if/when we do anything interesting (like watching Peonies grow)

FEATURES OF THE BRAIN OF A PERSON OVER 60

Found this article on the brain & aging.  Interesting.

 The director of the George Washington University College of Medicine argues that the brain of an elderly person is much more plastic than is commonly believed.

At this age, the interaction of the right and left hemispheres of the brain becomes harmonious, which expands our creative possibilities. That is why among people over 60 you can find many personalities who have just started their creative activities.

Of course, the brain is no longer as fast as it was in youth. However, it wins in flexibility. That is why, with age, we are more likely to make the right decisions and are less exposed to negative emotions.

The peak of human intellectual activity occurs at about 70 years old, when the brain begins to work at full strength.

Over time, the amount of myelin in the brain increases, a substance that facilitates the rapid passage of signals between neurons. Due to this, intellectual abilities are increased by 300% compared to the average.

And the peak of active production of this substance falls on 60-80 years of age. Also interesting is the fact that after 60 years, a person can use 2 hemispheres at the same time. This allows you to solve much more complex problems.

Professor Monchi Uri from the University of Montreal believes that the brain of an elderly person chooses the least energy-intensive path, cutting unnecessary and leaving only the right options for solving the problem. A study was conducted in which different age groups took part. Young people were confused a lot when passing the tests, while those over 60 made the right decisions.

Now let's look at the features of the brain at the age of 60-80. They are really rosy.

FEATURES OF THE BRAIN OF A PERSON OVER 60

1. The neurons of the brain do not die off, as everyone around them says. Connections between them simply disappear if a person does not engage in mental work.

2. Absent-mindedness and forgetfulness appear due to an overabundance of information. Therefore, you do not need to focus your whole life on unnecessary trifles.

3. Beginning at the age of 60, a person, when making decisions, uses not one hemisphere at the same time, like young people, but both.

4. Conclusion: if a person leads a healthy lifestyle, moves, has a feasible physical activity and has full mental activity, intellectual abilities DO NOT decrease with age, but only GROW, reaching a peak by the age of 80-90 years.

So, don't be afraid of old age. Strive to develop intellectually. Learn new crafts, make music, learn to play musical instruments, paint pictures! Dance! Take an interest in life, meet and communicate with friends, make plans for the future, travel as best you can. Don't forget to go to shops, cafes, concerts. Do not lock yourself alone - it is destructive for any person. Live with the thought: all the good things are still ahead of me!

A large study in the United States found that:

The most productive age of a person is from 60 to 70 years;

The 2nd most productive human stage is the age from 70 to 80 years old;

3rd most productive stage - 50 and 60 years old.

Before that, the person has not yet reached his peak.

The average age of the Nobel Prize laureates is 62;

The average age of the presidents of the 100 largest companies in the world is 63 years;

The average age of pastors in the 100 largest churches in the United States is 71;

The average age of dads is 76 years.

This confirms that a person's best and most productive years are between 60 and 80 years of age.

This study was published by a team of doctors and psychologists in the NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE.

They found that at 60 you reach the peak of your emotional and mental potential, and this continues until you are 80.

Therefore, if you are 60, 70 or 80 years old, you are at the best level of your life.

Seeing the family in Marengo, IA

 70º here in Clarinda with sunny skies at 11:30 am Tuesday.

Had enjoyable weekend in Marengo with Cam & Patty, their kids and grandkids.

Easter eggs were hidden and found by the 2-year old and 6-year old great grandkids.

Played a bingo game that the kids could be involved in.

Great Grand's enjoyed the things Phyllis had gotten for them, some in Mexico.

Have most of the stuff from the deck, stored in the shop building over-winter, back on the deck.  This is wheeling the swing seat over.

Gave the Ash tree it's annual dose of Emerald Ash Borer treatment.

Will probably mow the yard today---since some neighbors have already done it to theirs.

Home in Clarinda, IA for a while

 60º with heavy overcast here in Clarinda, IA at 5:00 pm on Monday.

We finished our drive from La Feria, TX to Clarinda, IA about 11 am Sunday.  Had several days of driving in very high winds.  Not the best when you are towing a box behind your pickup.  Sunday had strong south winds and when we were driving the 40 miles between Hiawatha, KS and St. Joe, MO average MPG was 8.2 -- turned north at St. Joe and between there and Clarinda, even with several miles going west at times, averaged 12.2.  Quite a percentage different.  Was on the road 4 days and stayed in Passport America Parks 2 nights at the $20 and two nights in driveways of friends.  Not bad for motel costs!  More than makes up for the gas used.

Had a great supper with them, of their own raised beef!  And then spent the evening letting the women beat the men in most of the Pegs & Jokers games.

Before supper, I rode with Bill the short mile to his cattle yard where he topped off water for the cattle and fed the young bull he recently got.

Kathy has never turned away a cat, and many have multiplied on their farm---they have never had mouse problems!

While at our RV Park near Perkins, OK, we watched local news program on TV.  They never had a break for advertisments.........there were ads continually running on the side as they continued with the news, weather, and sports.  I'm sure it added much time to their actual content of broadcast.

We got to Harold & LaRhoda Neher's about 12:30 Saturday.  Ate lunch at the local Pizza Hut.  Then visited and played Pegs & Jokers.  LaRhoda had a salad & sandwich supper and we played some more Pegs & Jokers.  To keep the women happy, Harold & I let them win most of the games.  Sunday morning had an excellent egg casserole breakfast and we were on our final leg home from Texas.

Dumped all the tanks of the trailer down at the city's dumpsite near the airport and backed the trailer into the drive.  Took a bit of time to unload much of the pickup, including the 40 lbs. of 1015 Onions.  I had individually wrapped each onion to protect them while in the pickup and to extend the time before they need used.  Hung them up in the garage.

Then, We went up to the Presbyterian church and I sang with Linda's group -- Cantata.  I was sight reading, where the group had practiced for a month, but although there were 6 or 7 basses. there were only two tenors and Linda appreciated the help.

 I got along well, as Bob Keefer is a very strong tenor and I followed him well.

Afterwards we went with all the chorus and spouses to Linda & Ron's new house for cookies & punch.  Got a tour of their nice new home.

The gathering were all around the TV, watching the Iowa University Ladies Basketball team playing in the finals.

Today I cleaned the winter's collection of leaves off the deck and rolled the Softub out of the shop and got it filled with water, and the pump started.  It is heated only by the ambient heat from the circulating pump.  Was up to about 60º a bit ago, will be at 100º by sometime tomorrow.

More later, LCM

"Paint" by numbers - on the smartphone

 Recent weeks I got into several apps of paint by numbers and Phyllis also picked up on it.  Our phones are tied together, so saved pictures...
