13 Days and we will head south

90º with a "feel like" of 96º here in Clarinda, IA at 4:30 pm Monday.

Saturday evening we went to Jay's Pizza here in town for supper with several who used to be our neighbors in the country.  Marcene  VonDiligan is seated at the far left in this picture.  Phyllis is holding here Great Granddaughter.

Jim & Evelyn Whipple lived across the highway and about a quarter mile west of us when we lived on Highway 2 west of Clarinda.  They have now moved to a house here in Clarinda -- just about a thousand feet from us - on the north side of Highway 2 here in town and we are a block south of Highway 2.  Jim is 90 years old and getting around real slow; nearly blind and sits in his garage now like he used to sit on the front porch out west of town (he can't see the TV)
In this picture Marcene is seated at left with granddaughter Tia behind her holding great granddaughter.  Tia's other grandmother is at the right of the picture.  Marcene (88) still lives in the farm house a mile or so off Highway 2.

At coffee after church Sunday Bob & Maxine Hamm's daughter (cutting the cake) served cake and punch celebrating their 70th Wedding Anniversary.  Though I sat by Bob and visited with him I didn't get a picture of him.  So, here is what I copied out of the Clarinda Herald Journal e- edition:

Maxine his getting her coffee in this picture.  Bob was
sitting beside me at the time I took the photo.

This morning I finally scooped the cut up branches
over the hedge.  This was about 10 loads before cutting up.

Dug out the ash tree leaves from the west
side of the shop this morning.  A little less
for when we get back in the spring.  It has
lost maybe half of its leaves.

Got our summer's worth of pop cans recycled this morning as well as the paper, cardboard, plastic and tin.
Phyllis has spent a lot of time with neighbor lady who had her take her to the emergency room Friday, spent time with her Saturday, Sunday and today, including bringing here home.  Within 10 minutes the ambulance was there and took her back to the hospital and are now taking her to  Lincoln, NE - she has had trouble with timing of her heart - too fast and/or then irregular.

Getting things done around the house before we leave for the south on the 30th.

... the jury acquitted him. Later that day Carlson came back to the judge who had presided at the hearing.
"Your honour," he said, "I wanna get out a warrant for that dirty lawyer of mine."
"Why ?" asked the judge. "He won your acquittal. What do you want to have him arrested for?"
"Well, your honour," replied Carlson, "I didn't have the money to pay his fee, so he went and took the car I stole."

Two hamburgers walk into a bar.
They go up to the bartender and say, "We'd like two pizzas with mushrooms." The bartender replies, "I'm sorry we don't serve food."
  • This guy walks into a bar, carrying a crocodile and a chicken. He sets them down on the stool next to him, and says to the (uncertain-looking) bartender "I'll have a Scotch and Soda." Then the crocodile says "And I'll have a Whiskey Sour." The (dumbfounded) bartender gasps "That's incredible; I've never seen a crocodile that could talk!" And the guy says "He can't; the chicken is a ventriloquist."

  • A sea anemone floats into a bar and says to the bartender, "I'd like to buy a drink for that man in the corner." The bartender takes the drink to the man in the corner and says, "This is from your friend over there." The man replies, "With anemone like that, who needs friends?"

  • A bear went into a bar and ordered a beer. He gave the bartender a twenty and the bartender went to the other end of the bar to put the money in the register. The second bartender whispered to the first, "He's a bear, what does he know, short-change him." The first bartender brings the bear $10 in change. A little while later the bartender starts talking to the bear and mentions, "We don't get many bears in this bar." The bear replies, "I'm not surprised, at $10 a beer I sure won't be back again....
Later, Lynn
