Heavy rain on the last day of March

48º with rain at 11 am Sunday.  Started raining in middle of night and has rained steadily since.  Was 83º yesterday and had AC running -- have furnace on now!
A singing can chorus!
The 2019 Nebraska Flood - CLICK HERE  These pictures are hard to believe of the devastation that has  been perpetrated on the people of Nebraska (and southwest Iowa)
Last night we helped neighbors get rid of a lot of
pizza and visited with many of our street neighbors

For many years we have occasionally  eaten at Santa Rosa's Coffee Shop, which was 6 miles north of our park, usually after church services.  A little over a month ago, after their lease had run out, they took a building in down-town La Feria and converted it to a cafe -- larger than the one in Santa Rosa.  It took nearly a month to get the building in shape, get all the proper licenses, etc. and then were held up for over a week while the city got the gas lined up for the building.  They finally opened last Friday for noon.  We did not know of that opening or would have gone up for supper, probably.

We ate there Saturday morning.  They ere quite full when we arrived and were quite busy.  It took quite a while to get served, but it was the same good food they had been serving in Santa Rosa.  Will try to return there a few times before we leave here in a few weeks.

GROANER'S CORNER:((
Patient 1: 'Why did you run away from the operation table?'

Patient 2: 'The nurse was repeatedly saying 'don't get nervous', 'don't be afraid', 'be strong', 'this is a small operation only', things like that.'

Patient 1: 'So what was wrong in that? Why were you so afraid?'

Patient 2: 'She was talking to the surgeon!'

Food for thought

A   young woman was about to finish her first year of  college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly  expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years  harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One   day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the  need for more government programs.
The   self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father.

He   responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken   aback, she  answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all
her time studying.

Her   father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey
doing?"

She   replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast.  She's always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over."

Her   father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0.

That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."

The   daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That's a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"

The   father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the conservative side of the fence."

If   you ever wondered  what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

*If a   conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

*If a   conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

*If a   conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him..

*If a   conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

*If a   conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and Jesus silenced.

*If a   conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

*If a   conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh. A liberal will delete it because he or she is "offended."

Phyllis' last day on the job

Yesterday was Phyllis' birthday - March 28th. 41 years ago we buried my Dad on her birthday.  Miles, Kermit L., Sep 6, 1904 - Mar 25, 1978.

Is 75º at 11:40 am with predicted high of 81º.  This Sunday's high is predicted at 69º at 1 am and is to be 49º at 5 pm Sunday with rain  A bit of a change in the weather coming!
The office girls celebrating Phyllis' birthday

Phyllis with the corsage I gave
her at noon.

The two vases of flowers she got, one on the left from
the Office and on the right from Cameron & Patty/

The office celebrates birthdays in a big way, taking Phyllis out to lunch (Closing down the whole damned office and all the staff going) at 9:00 am in the morning, then a whole bunch of pictures for Facebook.  We took the remainder of food from the Park Kitchen, including a fair amount of frozen food, to Loaves & Fishes in Harlingen where they daily feed the indigent.

Last night Darlene Winslow held a birthday party for Phyllis at Bob & Bobi Raab's place.  (her park model isn't big enough for the group)

With many people leaving every day, the park is getting empty again, nearly like when we came here in mid-October.  We won't be leaving for another couple weeks, and are planning a few stops on the way home, so probably won't get to Clarinda until nearly May - or at least the last week of April.

GROANER'S CORNER:((  Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste, all the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number! When I walked to the store it was less a walk than a lumber.

I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared; The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared, The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese. And the way I'd never said, 'No thank you, please.'

As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt and prepared once again to do battle with dirt--- I said to myself, as I only can 'You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!'

So--away with the last of the sour cream dip, Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip Every last bit of food that I like must be banished 'Till all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won't have a cookie--not even a lick. I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick. I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie, I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.

I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore--- But isn't that what January is for? Unable to giggle, no longer a riot. Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

Just coasting along near end of March

73º here in La Feria at 10:30 Tuesday morning with predicted high of 77º

Now discover Gold Wing Express is sponsoring two
music cruises - off California coast and another one similar to
the one we went on this last February.  The same ship goes out the week before with another Rio Grande Valley sponsored cruise for Winter Texans.  Lots of cruising possible in February.

This morning we went to my dermatologist for check-up
before heading north.  Then we ate breakfast at
Las Vegas Restaurant in Harlingen

Phyllis is at the office - only 4 days left.  i will be heading to McAllen in a bit where we will have Barbershop Chorus practice and then go to a nursing home in McAllen where an old member of the chorus is celebrating an anniversary and sing for him (them).

More later, Lynn

Last week of March

75º here in La Feria, TX at 11:30 am Sunday March 24th.  Guess I haven't written for a bit  Will try to catch up.
At the vanilla section in one of the stores.

Last Thursday we rode with Dick and Deanne Messer to Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, just south of  Weslaco, Texas where they were having their annual spring "Tourist Day" celebration.
This was not a Tequila drink - it was straight Tequila -- only
a few sips was enough.  The peanuts were good, though

Venders were in the street and at least 2 stages were set up

We were sitting at the main stage, with Dick & Deanne behind us.

Several cute kids were seated around us for a while

We watched several different dance groups

Paying for the vanilla

Heading to the car with our new straw hats.

Click HERE  for some of the Progreso program during "Tourist Day"  ---

We stopped in Pharr, Texas on the way home to  eat
barbecue at Willy's.

Maybe this is Barbershop Harmony
1

Saturday we ate lunch in Pharr at
Rudy's where we met Winters

At Doris & Lyle Winters' place

Doris has a nice flower patch

Look at the Texas Bluebonnets!

Somebody shook the coke, so it fizzed over the top of
Bobi's glass

Played several games of Pegs & Jokers that afternoon.

Gas has edged up lately - now from $2.27 to $2.32 per gal

Used Chlorox to take the green off the carport roof edge

Our Aloe plant is blooming

Did some repainting on front of house

Both the upper wall and the Texas Star repainted

Couple photos from Highway 2 and Interstate 29 just west of our Clarinda, IA home about 40 miles.  The whole area along the Missouri River is flooded.
There are daily news articles in the local papers about the illegal immigrants who are crossing the border along the Rio Grande River where there are still no walls.  Many days there are 1,000 or more picked up and have to be handled, most from Central America, many bringing kids who are already sick.  If the bone-headed liberal Democrats in Washington (and the rest of America) would get their heads out of their asses and get the wall finished it would stem some of the billions of dollars that are being spent on these illegal immigrants in way of the housing, welfare, medical costs being spent all the annually rather than a single expenditure in getting the wall finished.  There are many sections of wall along our area, but there are many openings and sections that walls are not in place.  The Democrats want them all in so they can vote for their damned socialism and ruin the entire country.  Nuff said.

One inch of rain in the last couple days

68º with humidity at 83% at 3 pm Wednesday.  Haven't seen the sun for a week or so and with the half-inch of rain I dumped this morning added to the half-inch yesterday I think that totals more than had fallen previous to that since we got here in mid October last year.

Finished the concerts for the year for the Magic Valley Men of A-Chord barbershop chorus, still having Tuesday's practices.  Getting fewer in number as members are heading north to their summer residences.

Tuesday evening Darlene Winslow came by and we played three games of Cribbage.

Showing Patty where Messer's moved when the new Mobile Home came in.

Have watched this building being constructed during this
winter and just realized today it is the new convention
center for Harlingen that has been talked about.  They were
to build a multi-story hotel by it, but that is being delayed.

Have our last, of the season, pot-luck supper tonight at 5 pm.
We are planning on going to the Progreso, Mexico, tomorrow with Messers.

"Paint" by numbers - on the smartphone

Recent weeks I got into several apps of paint by numbers and Phyllis also picked up on it.  Our phones are tied together, so saved pictures...
