Country Music at Monarch Place - near Oregon, Missouri

62º here in Clarinda, IA at 8:45 am Tuesday.

Was 50º when I went to the Softub at 8 am this morning.  Cooling weather into fall!

Sunday Patty Steckelberg went with us to a place near Oregon,MO to country western music program with Sharon & Roger Kenaston, Mike Hughes, and Vance & Debra Monday.

This 3-year old building was built about 2.5 miles down a limestone rock road and is definitley rural.  Owner told us they have weddings and music venues.  Is on their 360 acre farm.

These two photos are to the back of the building, where wedding photos are taken.

One evening last week we spent about 35 minutes in a 3-block line of cars to get up to the Lutheran Church where they were holding a free-will donation fish dinner as a fund raiser for the Lutheran School.

Was a good meal of deep-fried fish with corn and cheesy potatoes!

Must share a photo of Phyllis' cousin-in-law Kim Runyan with her grandkids.  They live in central Mississippi and we had visited with them on our way to Texas in the fall of 2022.

At left is latest picture of our Great Grandson David Long.

These photos were sent to us by friend in Kenwood RV.

After having the lot to the west of us empty for the last 7 or 8 years, the park has moved in a mobile home they will rent or sell.  Been a long time since we had a unit that close on that side

Will leaave in an hour or so to make Blood Donation for Red Cross Blood Mobile here in Clarinda.

All for now, LC

Tuesday was Bob Newhart's birthday

·
George Robert Newhart (September 5, 1929) is 94 years old today! Newhart came to prominence in 1960 when his album of comedic monologues, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, became a worldwide bestseller and reached number one on the Billboard pop album chart; it remains the 20th-best selling comedy album in history. The follow-up album, The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!, was also a success, and the two albums held the Billboard number one and number two spots simultaneously.
Newhart later went into acting, starring as Chicago psychologist Dr. Robert Hartley in The Bob Newhart Show during the 1970s and then as Vermont innkeeper Dick Loudon on the 1980s series Newhart. He also had two short-lived sitcoms in the 1990s titled Bob and George and Leo. Newhart also appeared in film roles such as Major Major in Catch-22 and Papa Elf in Elf. He provided the voice of Bernard in the Walt Disney animated films The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under. In 2004, he played the library head Judson in The Librarian, a character which continued in 2014 to the TV series The Librarians. In 2013, Newhart made his first of six guest appearances on The Big Bang Theory as Professor Proton, for which he received his first Primetime Emmy Award on September 15, 2013.

67º with clear skies here in Clarinda, IA at 11:00 am on Thursday.

Settling into fall-like weather

Had our first, of the season, choir practice last night.  Met at the Methodist Church and also included was the choir from the Presbyterian church, Westminster.  Linda accompanies and directs both choirs.

Will sing this Sunday.

Yesterday was the 119th anniversary of the birth of my dad, Kermit Miles.  He was 39 years old a few months after I was born and 73 years old when he passed away.  So, I  only knew him for 35 years and he has been gone now 45 years.

With no measurable rainfall for quite some time now, the lawn is turning a brown color and mowing is certainly not happening.  Some pretty good size cracks are appearing in some non-grass areas under some large trees.

Clarinda All School Alumni Reunion on Labor Day Weekend

93º in Clarinda, IA with a "feel like" of 96º at 3:15 pm Monday.

This is the first Labor Day weekend in many years that we haven't spent our time in Macon, Missouri at their Bluegrass Festival.  They did not have it this year.  Instead, Phyllis' school--here in Clarinda--had an all-school reunion over the weekend.

88º with "feel like" of 93º here in Clarinda, IA at 12:45 pm on Tuesday.  How time flies!

Picture from Facebook of our granddaughter and her family with husband Keith's family at Marengo, IA this weekend.

Great Grandson David getting a jump on a hotdog.

Last Thursday evening we had pizza supper at Jay's Pizza with Al & Carolyn Rudhe from Shenandoah.

Some pictures from the Clarinda Alumni All-School Reunion this weekend.

At right is Paul & Marge Jones with their son Tom from Washington State.

Phyllis visiting with daughter of Darlene Eglehoff who has been long time friend here in Clarinda and now lives in Ankeny near her daughter.

Sunday afternoon they had replay of "Cardinal Capers" - various singing, skits, poems about "old" teachers, etc.  The video above is one of 3 or 4 songs that Tom Ives performed.
Phyllis got to visit with only a few from her class, but a lot from other classes.

At our last outing with the trailer we discovered a leek in the bubble cover over the shower.  Ordered in a new one and spent several days washing the roof and then taking off several layers of rubber caulking from the old cover and installing the new one.

Is now (4:30 pm Tuesday) very windy out with temperature at 89º and "feel like" of 93º.  We did get about a 5 minute shower early this morning.

We are now in the car parking business.  Friends from Texas, who live in St Joe, MO left this morning on a bus trip with Neiharts who pick up people at HyVee store about 5 blocks from us.  I took them to the bus and then brought their car back to park here until the 14th when they return from a trip to New York and area.

Enjoying cooler weather (and not being in Hurricane Idalia

84 degrees with "feel like" of 85 degrees.  That's more like it.  At 1:15 pm Wednesday.  Nice not running the AC for a while. Window fan pulling air through the house is great.

Monday we drove the 110 miles to Harold & LaRhoda Neher's place near Hiawatha, KS for a nice visit after having lunch with them at

in Highland, Kansas.

Caught up on all the news, settled some of the world's problems and then got down to several games of Pegs & Jokers.

They don't get away from their house often and really enjoy some company for a while.  We miss seeing them daily in the winter like we used to when they lived right next to us in Kenwood RV Park.

House to the east of us has been used for several years by Helicopter crews for the Clarinda Hospital.  One company occupied it for several years and then that company pulled out.  Was vacant for a year or so, and then another company maintained helicopter rescue and transportation for several years.  That company has now left Clarinda and the house has been cleaned out.  Not sure what use the hospital will have for that house now.

Grass keeps growing, even in the heat of this summer.  Hopefully necessity of mowing often will decrease here soon.

Heavens to Mergatroyd!
The other day a not so elderly (I say 75) lady said something to her son about driving a Jalopy; and he looked at her and said, "What the heck is a Jalopy?" He had never heard of the word jalopy! She knew she was old ...But not that old.
Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory when you read this and chuckle.
About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology.
These phrases included: Don't touch that dial; Carbon copy; You sound like a broken record; and Hung out to dry.

Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie . We'd put on our best bib and tucker, to  straighten up and fly right.

Heavens to Betsy!         Gee whillikers!          Jumping Jehoshaphat!       Holy Moley!

We were in like Flynn  and living the life of Riley ; and even a regular guy couldn't accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China!
Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when's the last time anything was swell? Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys and the D.A.; of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes, and pedal pushers.

Oh, my aching back! Kilroy was here, but he isn't anymore.
We wake up from what surely has been just a short nap, and before we can say, "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!" Or, "This is a fine kettle of fish!"

We discover that the words we grew up with, the words that seemed omnipresent, as oxygen, have vanished with scarcely a notice from our tongues and our pens and our keyboards.

Poof, go the words of our youth. Where have all those great phrases gone?
Long gone: Pshaw, The milkman did it. Hey! It's your nickel. Don't forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper.

Well, Fiddlesticks! Going like sixty. I'll see you in the funny papers. Don't take any wooden nickels. Wake up and smell the roses.
It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter has liver pills.
This can be disturbing stuff! (Carter's Little Liver Pills are gone too!)

Leaves us to wonder where Superman will find a phone booth.

See ya later, alligator! After a while crocodile. Oki-Doki artichokey!

AH, cooler weather

72º with a "feel like" of 72º here in Clarinda, IA at 11:10 am Sunday.  Predicted high of 77º today.  Shut off the air conditioner last night and have windows open with window fan bringing in the fresh air.  If it stays like this for a while I won't mind.

Not much going on.  Cleaned out and buried the old financial papers I found last week in the shop.

Received the new acrylic dome cover for the roof of the trailer that I will put on sometime in the next few weeks.  Determining if I need to put new rubber coating on the roof of the trailer.

Cam & Patty will be here this weekend for his 40th class reunion and Phyllis & I will attend several of the CHS All Class Reunion events Saturday and Sunday.

Later, LC
