Cooler weather

Holy Petunia!  It has been a while since I have posted.  Will have to check my photos to see what I have been doing.
67ยบ here in La Feria at 11:00 am Thursday with heavy overcast.  Last several days have been "long pants days" with cool weather.  Have had quite a few RV's leave for home these last several days.  Suppose some 20 units are gone for the season.

Was raining Saturday - Harold Neher heading from our place next door
to his place on his electric scooter.

Spent more time in Progreso, MX Tuesday morning than we had intended. Phyllis was getting fitted for crowns and a bridge that had been worked up before.  However, with some pain in the area it was found she needed a root-canal in the next tooth and a post & core put in, then temporary crowns over the three places.  From our original 9:30 am appointment, it lasted until close to 1:30 pm.  She was in lot of pain that afternoon, but it is much better now and think it is going to take care of the pain she has experienced the last 6 weeks or more.

When I came out of Johnny's True Value Hardware store in Harlingen
yesterday, this guy came up with a Kleenex bottle and hand full of newspaper,
asking if he could wash the windows for a dollar.  He did pretty good work, and seemed to appreciate it.

Repairs done to this big air conditioning unit which cools the Rec Hall.
Last week a lady got out of her car at the mail boxes, across the street, leaving her
car in Reverse gear and the door open.  It backed across the street on its own and pushed
this unit clear back against the building -- and her door caught the bicycle stand and moved it.
Fortunately, no bikes were at the stand.

GROANER’S CORNER:((
As a senior citizen was driving down I-75 in Sarasota Florida his cell phone rang.  Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him,  "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Interstate 75".  "Please Be Careful!"
"It's not just one car," said Herman.   "It's hundreds of them!"

Books I've been reading lately

I have been reading quite a few books this winter.
Just started this one - story of two brothers
who grew up in France in the early 1940's
during Germany's occupation.
This book was written, co-written, by
an "inside trader" on Wall Street who
became addicted to the trading, was caught
and served prison time.

Very interesting history of Luce, who started
Life, Time, and other magazines, as well
as life of his wife Clare Booth Luce.

This self-written book is by man who escaped Cuba
and came to Clarinda, Iowa (our hometown) when his
Mother became Spanish Teacher in our High School
in 1961.  Phyllis knew him and his mother.  A
very interesting book.

History of the men in government at
the time of 9/11 and the wars that
followed.  Some insight, to me, of
how things are done in Washington, DC

I read Readers Digest version of this book, which
went from 1932 to 1952.  Found out that the
actual book covered 1932 to 1972, so will
have to get the full book.  The times of the
Depression and Dust Bowl brought me
back to many stories Dad used to tell.  He and
Mom were married in 1934 and started farming
the next year or so during those very hard
times.

This is story of some children in
a Ghetto area of Chicago.  Is so sad
to read about all the gangs and killing
the very young kids were exposed to.

This very interesting story is from diaries
and correspondence left by two men who
were Secretaries to President Lincoln.
I have it on Kindle on my phone and have
been reading it for couple months, mostly
as I fall asleep at night.

Just got this downloaded on Kindle and
looking forward to reading it.

I told you I plagiarize the Groaner's Corner from another blog.
Well, here is a picture he put on his blog today - what he saw when
driving in Florida yesterday

GROANER’S CORNER:(( For two solid hours, the lady sitting next to a man on an airplane had told him about her grandchildren. She had even produced a plastic-foldout photo album of all nine of the children.  She finally realized that she had dominated the entire conversation on her grandchildren.  "Oh, I've done all the talking, and I'm so sorry. I know you certainly have something to say. Please, tell me... what do you think of my grandchildren?"
-----------------------------------
- “Back in the days when the guillotine was first used, people wondered, is this what we may beheaded for in the future?”

- Why did the tomato blush?  Because he saw the salad dressing!
-------------------------------------
A southern minister was completing a temperance sermon. With great statement he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river."  With even greater emphasis he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river!"  And then finally, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and pour it into the river!Sermon complete, he then sat down.  The song leader stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn #365: 'Shall We Gather at the River.'"

Big Concert and Appreciation Day over

70ยบ at 8:22 am with predicted high today of 87ยบ.  Has been busy since my last posting.  Full day Friday with the Appreciation Day taking all of Phyllis' attention until nearly 4 pm; I left at 1:30 pm to go to Pharr, TX to prepare for our joint concert that evening.

Day started off at 10:00 am with the Radio
Controlled car guys racing, slam bamming,
and generally entertaining the crowd.

 Back at the Rec Hall
about 11 am Phyllis
is introducing Lee to tell
about Texas/Mexican
history.  She is
wearing her clown
uniform.

Will this really do?

I have made it to Center Church in Pharr.  Had picked up Bob & Denny from
Snow to Sun RV Park.  Bob's wife to drive over in the evening with Denny's wife and
they both will ride home with her.  Phyllis riding with Nehers and Messers and she will ride
home with me.  Guys here are taking in the risers for us and others to use.

The band rehearsing

Lined up, with two other vocal groups and the band, ready
to practice for the finale.  This took some 45 minutes and was
pretty rough till we finally were able to do it together.

Senior Ambassadors rehearsing.  Our leader, Bob Lumkil, is in
this group also, in redish shirt 4th from right side.

We had quite a bit of time after the afternoon rehearsal until time for
us to be on stage that evening.  Bob, Denny and I went to a Whataberger nearby

The Senior Ambassadors during the concert.

After the three vocal groups had performed there was a break to move the risers
and bring out chairs for the band.  Here is Phyllis with the Messeers and Nehers

The Rio Grande Valley Band performing one of their 6 songs.

More waiting in the back room.

Waiting - before we changed into our uniforms - this is Bob Weise

Some of the older gentlemen caught a nap

Our Barbershop group - The Men of A-Chord

Had 35 tickets sold to people in the park (8 of those to people who used to live in the park).  Many of us stopped at Dairy Queen here in La Feria about 9:45 pm.  Show had ended at 9 pm and it was some 27 miles back to Kenwood.   I had left the festivities at the park a little after 1 pm.  Phyllis had many games, line dancing, a birthday party for all birthdays all year long, and other things.  She was bushed

Rained much of yesterday.  Park had a Yard Sale and it dampened that.  We did not set anything out this time, so sat on the patio and watched the other people going by.

Need to head up to church now.  ----- Today is 100th anniversary of Phyllis' Mom's birthday.

March is here!

83ยบ here in La Feria, TX at 2:30 pm Thursday with the wind continuing to blow - about 15 mph right now.  It has blown 24 hours a day for some time now.  Would think we would get used to it!

Going over some literature on the cruise ship Carnival Vista that we go with Gold Wing Express and the music group (only 339 days away) and discovered Guy Fieri has a hamburger joint on it!

Well, you probably would never guess this, but it is now 7:45 am Friday and I got sidetracked yesterday.  Is 56ยบ and to be a nice day. Had windows open in the house yesterday and overnight.  Phyllis has full day with the Appreciation Day today and I am to be down to the Rec Hall at 9:00 am to start making pop corn to have available at the Radio Controlled Race Car track at 10:00 am for when they watch the guys do their car racing.

Couple pictures I took of a load of big bales coming on the Interstate as I was coming back from Harlingen yesterday noon.

Went down to the Mexican Cafe on the west edge of Harlingen yesterday at 10:00 am with the Spanish Class and we had brunch.  Did as much conversing as possible in Spanish with the waitresses and each other.  Had 27 people, most of them had been attending class, some brought spouses who have not been coming to class and a couple who used to live in the park and she speaks fluent Spanish also came.

This is the second, of the year, group to tour the back lots of Gladys Porter
Zoo in Brownsville this week.  We did not go this time.
Went to Meet & Greet yesterday afternoon, but guess I did not take any pictures.  Did not have a program, just a gal from a financial planner place and guy from Walgreens gave short presentation and then we ate and visited.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Bob had this problem of getting up late in the morning and was always late for work.  After a few weeks of this, his boss was mad and threatened to fire him if he didn't do something about it.
So Bob went to his doctor, who gave him a pill and told him to take it before he went to bed. He got a great night's sleep and actually beat the alarm in the morning. After a leisurely breakfast, he cheerfully drove to work.  "Boss," he said, "The pill my doctor prescribed actually worked!"  "That's all fine," said the boss, "But where were you yesterday?"

------------------------------
The father of five children had won a toy Lion at a raffle. He called his kids together to ask which one should have the present.  "Who is the most obedient?" he asked. "Who never talks back to Mother? Who does everything she says?"  Five small voices answered in union. "Okay, Dad. you get to keep the Lion."
====================
Big day with the Appreciation Day all day here and then I leave by 1:45 pm to head west to prepare for and then be in the concert tonight in Pharr, TX.
