Thursday

77º degrees here in La Feria, TX at 9:00 am as I start this - high predicted of 85º
Ever been in a place where you wonder how you
got there and how you will get back?

Been a while since I posted.  Monday we went to Gatti's Pizza with about 25 people from the park.  Phyllis ran the Bingo with Don Ferguson calling the numbers -  rolls were served while playing Bingo and then they were let loose on the salad bar, pizza and potato bar/spaghetti bar.

I cut and painted scrap plywood for by the front step.

Think it helps give a "finished" look to it.

1
Tuesday I drove the 30-some miles west to McAllen
to practice with the Men of A-Chord barbershop group.

Still small group as many not in the Valley from the North.  Had quite a few Leads - part I sing.  Two hours a week is not much practice and I am trying to put in practice at home.

Yesterday I started putting screens on the newer roof portion of the Texas room.  Works fine until the sun gets shining direct and heating up.  Will work on it as soon as this is posted.

Yesterday I finally started working on these
strips I bought in November of 2016.

Got them painted - will put them on the
ceiling to cover the joints of ceiling tile.

Phyllis spent much of yesterday at DonWes Flea Market with a booth that Kenwood had set up advertising for people to bring their RV's to the park.  Talked with quite a few and handed out literature.  Seemed to be some serious interest.

Today she and Manager Rosie are to attend a meeting for Park Activity Directors at the Snow To Sun RV Park.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A man solves the problem of too many visiting relatives.  He borrowed money from the rich ones and loaned it to the poor ones.   Now none of them come back.

Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock. The brunette balances their checkbook, then takes their last $600 dollars out west to another ranch where a man has a prize bull for sale.  Upon leaving, she tells her sister, "When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I’ll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home."  The brunette arrives at the man’s ranch, inspects the bull, and decides she does want to buy it. The man tells her that he can sell it for $599, no less. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news.  She walks into the telegraph office, and says, "I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I’ve bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home."
The telegraph operator explains that he’ll be glad to help her, then adds, "It’s just 99 cents a word."
Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette only has $1 left. She realizes that she’ll only be able to send her sister one word.  After thinking for a few minutes, she nods, and says, "I want you to send her the word, ‘comfortable.’"  The telegraph operator shakes his head. "How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her the word, ‘comfortable’?"  The brunette explains, "My sister’s blonde. She’ll read it very slow."

Veteran's Day Ceremony

74º here in La Feria, TX at 10:00 am Sunday as I start this.  Heavy overcast and forecast of off-and-on rain all day.
We have been here at our winter home one month now. Am almost getting used to it -- can even find my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night!

Since our office personnel are not in the office on Saturdays -- the real Veteran's Day -- a ceremony was held on Friday morning.

Had a good attendance by the park people

Phyllis conducted a short program after having the residents pick up cookies and/or rolls with coffee.
Rochelle, John, and Robert - she is office assistant, and
the other two are maintenance men -- are at right of this photo.

Bob did a few readings.  Phyllis is at right of this photo.
I also read an item on thoughts from a non-veteran.

The attending Veterans who winter in our park.
Phyllis in her office

I continue to putter around the place - almost finished off
the surround of the kitchen window to the Texas Room.
Saturday -- We usually watch very little sports on TV - usually just the "home" teams of colleges in Iowa and Nebraska.  We watched Iowa State get beat, then Nebraska get beat and finally Iowa get beat.  Not a good day for the "home teams".
Some Mexican workers are taking out a really old trailer.  It had
a broken axle last week and they replaced it.  Only had one tire
on this side with air in it -- and they are leaving the "tip-outs" out.

They have it on the street, and pulled out of here with only one tire
on this side having air in it.  Don't know how far they are going........
Putting a second coat on piece that will go at the outer edge
of the front steps.

Rode our trikes about 4 miles this morning -- 80º now with
a "feel like" of 84º at 1:00 PM

Just got back from neighbors place, picking the few lemons
from his tree.  Have gotten the last several years and probably
only a fourth of a crop this year.

Phyllis has about 25-30 people lined up to go to Gatti's  for bingo and pizza/pasta on Monday.

Finally did some tallying of miles we have pulled this Micro Lite Travel Trailer of ours.
Had pulled it 17,964 miles when we parked it here in the Park last winter.  Had the wheel bearings packed (was told this should be done every 10,000 miles, but even though had recorded all the times we were hitched to the trailer had never tallied it up.
And, since that time of packing the wheel bearings we have pulled the trailer for 6,465 miles with a total of 24,429 on it.  Think will replace the tires before we pull out next spring.  No fun having a flat when running down the highway.

GROANER'S CORNER:((  An attorney telephoned the governor just after midnight, insisting that he talk to him regarding a matter of utmost urgency. An aide eventually agreed to wake up the governor. 'So, what is it?' grumbled the governor.  'Judge Garber has just died' said the attorney, 'and I want to take his place.'  The governor replied: 'Well, it's OK with me if it's OK with the undertaker.'

Veterans Day event later today

58º here in La Feria, TX with heavy overcast skies at 4:00 pm Thursday.  Was 52º when we got up this morning -- had been 92º only a few days ago!

Got the reflective window treatment on all the west-facing windows.  Should be cooler--when the sun decides to shine again. Gila Films

Well, it is now 58º with rain and 10 mph north wind at 8:20 am on Friday.  I sort of got interrupted.

Worked on my Men of A-Chord barbershop music some.  Had our first practice this last Tuesday in McAllen.

Only had 13 at this first practice.  Many are not down in the Rio Grande Valley yet.  Think our first actual concert is not until in January.

Phyllis is in charge of the ceremony of changing the flag on the pole in front of the office and a program inside prior to that at 10:00 am this morning.  She has been putting in some long days with her job.  Several days attending Activity Director meetings and being told or shown events in the valley for people to participate in.

Tuesday we picked up Ardel and Marion Finken at the Harlingen Airport, who flew in from Indiana.  They are our next-door neighbors to the west.

Wednesday we picked up Joyce Holder at the McAllen Airport, who flew in from Michigan.  She lives just to the west of the Finkens.  On the way back from McAllen we ate at a new place for us in Weslaco - Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers.  They only serve chicken and it was good and a good price.

Yesterday morning I took neighbor Bill Winslow down to the La Feria Medical Clinic - was having some intestinal problems.

Worked on making boards to cover the front of the steps at the front entrance.  Just applied them -- think it makes the steps look better.
with back-boards added

GROANER'S CORNER:((  An angry wife to her husband on phone: "Where the hell are you?"
Husband: "Darling, you remember that jewelry shop where you saw the diamond necklace and totally fell in love with it, and I didn't have enough money at that time, and I said 'Baby it'll be yours one day'?"  Wife, with a smile and blushing: "Yeah I remember that my love!"  Husband: "  Well I'm in the pub right next to that shop."

Warm weekend

DO IT NOW -- WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

88º here in La Feria, TX at 3:30 Saturday with a "feel like" of 95º

This morning we picked up Bill & Darlene Winslow and drove over to Mission, TX to the National Butterfly Center for their free day to walk through the center.

Weather was great and we enjoyed several hours there.

Took lot of photos - saw quite a few butterflys, these are all in the wild, no cages/nets.

Took pictures of a lot of the description signs, will show a few here:
The Winslow's and Phyllis coming up one of the paths.

One visited Phyllis in the sunshine for a bit.

Board showing all the birds in the area

This was a caterpillar under microscope showing him shedding his head.

Guy showing kids a snake.

Stopped at Gonzalez Hamburgers in Donna ( Click Here! for info)

Ginormous hamburgers and onion rings.

Tuesday we went to Harlingen Airport and picked up
Darlene and Bill Winslow, flying in from Michigan

Watched most of the World Series games.  This was the 7th game.

Been working this week on putting window tint
on all windows.  This is inside back door.

Outside back door - during daylight it is just a mirror.

Friday put up window awnings for Maxine Koch

She is having back issues and was glad for the help.
Found have to take complete inside window frame off
the wall to get to the inside of the outer windows to put
the window tint on.
This is in Patty's bedroom - tint applied
and inside window frame back on and
all blinds and curtains back up.

Have to add last photo of Great Granddaughter Jessica
that was on Facebook yesterday, reading to her friends (?)

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Patient 1: “Why did you run away from the operation table?”
Patient 2: “The nurse was repeatedly saying ‘don’t get nervous’, ‘don’t be afraid’, ‘be strong’, ‘this is a small operation only’, things like that.”
Patient 1: “So what was wrong in that? Why were you so afraid?”

Patient 2: “She was talking to the surgeon!”
