Friday

84 degrees with bright sunshine here in La Feria, TX in the Rio Grande Valley at 1:45 pm Friday.

Went to Progreso, Mexico, yesterday and more work on my teeth.  Started this bunch of work in December last year.  In two weeks will finally be done with it after root canal, two extractions, two implants, two caps and next time will complete the implants and have two tooth bridge between them.

Our dentist's office had a complete remodel this summer with lots of bright white tile flooring, white walls, and lots of glass dividers.

At left shows waiting in line to show our Passports coming back from Mexico.

Ate at one of our favorite places, Panda Express, in Weslaco and then did a bit of shopping at HEB in Mercedes on the way home.
Left the pickup at Avila's Auto this morning for oil change and tire rotation.

Middle of our second week in the Valley

82 degrees with partly cloudy skies in La Feria, TX at 12:30 pm on Wednesday.

Monday we went to Port Isabel, which is at the west end of the causeway to South Padre Island.
CLICK HERE for website  We toured the small museum there and then Michelle and I went up the 75 narrow circular steps to the top.  CLICK HERE for a rather unusual YouTube of coming down the steps.

Is 83 degrees out with bright sunshine and 8 mph wind out of the south now at 4:30 pm, but still Wednesday.  Got the Neher house and golf cart washed and sprayed down a little on our house, too.

Will post this now----started it Sunday evening and picked it up 3 or 4 times, but always got interrupted.

GROANER'S CORNER:((    "Yes, Theo, what is it?" asked the teacher.  "I don’t want to alarm you, Miss Davis, but my dad said if I don't get better grades, someone was going to be in big trouble."

Don't drink anything while vacationing in the Caribbean. Especially in Jamaica. You'll get the rums.

I'm not saying I hate you, what I'm saying is that you are literally the Monday of my life.

Nice day in the Valley

73 degrees here in La Feria, TX at 7:25 pm on Tuesday.  I actually started this on Sunday evening and picked it up again several times.  Delivered Michelle to the airport this morning after showing her around the Valley every day for the last 7 days and playing Pegs & Jokers every evening I wasn't able to finish--with any luck I will do so tonight.

Spent some 5 hours walking the really big Mexican Flea Market in San Juan Sunday.  Huge place and covered most all of the aisles -- at least Michelle did.  Picked up an extra battery for my Ryobi tools and got a couple Bougainvillea plants to start filling in a screen behind our place to buffer the noise and activity of the apartment buildings now about 20 feet from our fence.  They are not finished yet, guess waiting on some items.

Trimmed off the freeze-damaged cactus leaves.  Bought some new Bougainvillea plants and dug them in more than 4 feet from the fence, on either side of the cactus.  Am considering removing the cactus completely and getting at least three more Bougainvillea to plant in line with these two and within a few years it would give a bit of a screen from the neighbors.

Here are the two planted with stakes around them to protect from the grass mowing crew.

Hauled the cut cactus leaves to the dump area yesterday.

Helped Maxine Koch put up her window awnings yesterday.  She and Judy arrived this last week.  Also, yesterday Ardel Finken arrived and I put his window awnings up for him.

Hey, Harold, got the weather station installed and is up and running.  Thanks so much.

Stopped to look at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe over in San Jan on the way home from the Flea Market Sunday.  Oliver & Mary Jo Herzberg showed us this place some 10 years ago.

Photo at right was taken in Port Isabella at the Pelican Station -- extra fine sea food.

Will sign off for now.  Have to go to Mexico Thursday to finish the major tooth work started last December.

Time in Mexico

56 degrees here in La Feria, TX and dark at 10:30 pm Friday.  Although a little cool, was a bright sunshiny day.

Went to Nuevo Progeso this morning and had rolls at Rene's Bakery then strolled the street.  Quite a few people there. And, a lot of vendor booths along the streets as well as the strolling sellers. All stores required face masks.  Phyllis & Michelle bought some blouses and other things.  I got Spanish Peanuts.  Michelle got several small purple things, at least some butterflies that can be taken on plane in luggage.

Ate at Nana's shortly after noon, ate outdoors.  They have traditional Mexican food.

As any of you who have been to Mexico know, you can't take a step without being asked to step into a dentist's office, Pharmacy, Chiropractor's office, Nail place, tummy tuck, whatever.  The guy by me in the photo at left is the only one who wasn't asking me to do something!

I set Harold's International wind thingy in my front yard.  Will take it with us back to Kansas for him on our way home next spring.

This ugly sculpture is way to ugly for my front yard, so is resting in the back yard for Burl Penny to pick up some day.

Got back to our place before 4 pm when Joe, the Veggie Man made his first stop for the season with vegetables.  Was good to get some fresh stuff, though will have to see him at DonWes tomorrow to get a few 'baby" 1015 onions he said are at that place that are small and starting to sprout but the only 1015s he has right now.  They are available from storage, he said but quite expensive and he isn't stocking them right now.  He said oranges and grapefruit from storage are available, but sky high in price.

We are lined up to go on boat ride on the Rio Grande River near Mission, TX tomorrow and will eat some of their famous Iowa Tenderloin sandwiches at the restaurant that also owns boat.  Stopping at Lowes for a water filter and also spending a little time at DonWes Flea Market.

Michelle here for a week

59 degrees here in La Feria, TX at 10 pm Thursday.

Had close to 1.75" of rain overnight when the cold front came through here.  Had been 89 degrees yesterday.

We were a little early at the Harlingen Airport yesterday afternoon when going to pick up our daughter, Michelle, (actually the plane was late) so we stopped at the Iowa Jima monument near the airport and spent some time.  I had not realized that this actual size (to the monument in Washington, DC) is actually the clay mockup made for that DC one.  After the bronze one was made for DC this one was cut into parts and loaded onto 12 flat-bed trucks and shipped to Harlingen.  It took nearly a year to reconstruct it and build the base, made from Indiana Stone.

After we picked up Michelle, we went to Stefano's for supper.

Tonight we played Pegs & Jokers

During the day today we cleaned stuff from our neighbor's house so we can show it to sell.

They have spent 20-some winters there and it took a while to move stuff so we can sort for discarding, selling at upcoming yard sale, keep some ourselves, and some we will take to them next spring.

We are planning to go over the Rio Grande River tomorrow to visit Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, Mexico for breakfast rolls at Rene's Bakery and then have a look-around.

Settling in at our winter home

86 degrees at 4:45 pm on Tuesday at Kenwood RV Park in La Feria, Texas.

Last posted Friday -- had many hours at the stage of the Pickin' & Grinnin' Bluegrass Festival west of Houston on Friday and Saturday.  I record most of the programs we listen to, not necessarily aiming the camera at the stage, and later convert the files all to audio MP3 and put on flash drives that we can listen to in the pickup driving down the road.  Takes a lot of time when not at the stage to get batteries charged, and files moved off the SD cards so have room for more.  Anyway, with the programs running till 11 at night it didn't give me a lot of time to post.  So here............

We drove the 340 or so miles to Kenwood Sunday, getting here around 5 pm.  Opened up the house and unloaded some stuff from the trailer that evening.  Monday I was counting the steps taken from the trailer to the house and the pickup to the house, but lost count somewhere between a bazillion and a gazillion.  We were really beat that night, but had gotten many of the things opened up at the house.  Put up the window awnings, filled the hot tub,

Noticed right away that all our new Bougainvillea plants were gone as well as the stubs from the older ones after freeze in February.  Phyllis talked with them at the office and found that edict had come down from corporate that nothing can be planted within four feet of the fence any more.  They removed everything in that distance.  I had brought my small chain saw with me thinking the big tree at the northwest corner of our house would need some work.  Needn't have....tree has been removed completely.

Ate lunch at La Feria Café a few blocks from our place on Monday.  Know the waitresses and check-out lady there well.

This morning we drove the 33 miles west to Frank & Pam's house for a little singing practice of the few Men Of A-Chord people who are here now.  Haven't sang much for some time and it was fun.  Only 7 of us.  The leader wasn't able to be there as his daughter, back home in Wisconsin, had emergency surgery of a leg removed due to blood clot and he and his wife drove there.  Had one Tenor, four Leads, one Baritone, and one Bass.

We will pick up our daughter at the Harlingen Airport tomorrow afternoon and she will spend a week with us.
