August is almost over!

70º here in Clarinda, IA at 12:00 Noon Monday.  Had 1 inch of rail early in the morning and another 1/2 inch of rain about 10:30 am.

Some of the clamping

setting up before gluing

Bottom with finish applied
Ah, it may look like this when done, and acrylic sheets added.

Done.  Sitting in window shelf of master bedroom.

Above shows progress on making a wood/glass case.  Is for daughter Michelle.  At right is picture taken in spring of 1987 of this Walnut wood before it was cut and then milled by Mac Farmer.

Am working on making a larger one now for Phyllis to display quilts in.

Our two granddaughters, and one great granddaughter came on Friday for a weekend visit.

Friday evening Phyllis' sister Beth and husband Steve stopped by for pizza supper.

Saturday morning Jessica helped her Grandma Great fix pancakes for breakfast.

They have removed much of the old Clarinda Elevator (where I worked from 1972 to 1974)

In next photo you can see the enormous latest bin just built.

The bin in the middle was built just lat year.
This gives perspective of size.  The leg structure in center is part of the original feed
mill when I worked there in early 1970's.

Did my "annual" roof cleaning of the travel trailer over the last couple days.

Just finished this book.
Mike Rowe's mother.
Very good book.

Just started this.  Red Steagal
interviewed him on his
"Somewhere West of
Wall-street" show and he is
a very interesting guy from Texas.

Have worked on this 863 page book for several
years.  Finally really getting into it.

A very good insight into the illness
of depression.

Have been reading many books this summer.  Here are some of them.

What gender are computers?

THIS IS WHY WE LOVE CHILDREN

 1) NUDITY  I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, 'Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!'

 2) OPINIONS  On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, 'The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents.'

 3) KETCHUP  A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. 'Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle.'

 4) MORE NUDITY   A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, 'What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?'

5) POLICE # 1 While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop?

Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report.

'My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?'

'Yes, that's right,' I told her.

'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?'

 6) POLICE # 2 It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me.

'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked.

 'It sure is,' I replied.

Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do?'

 7) ELDERLY While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

 8) DRESS-UP   A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, 'Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.'

 'And why not, darling?'

'You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.'

 9) DEATH   While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cottonwool, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.

The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

 10) SCHOOL  A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she said to her mother. 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!'

 11) BIBLE A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.

'Mama, look what I found,' the boy called out.

'What have you got there, dear?'

With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, 'I think it's Adam's underwear!'

NOW IF THIS DIDN'T BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY,GO BACK TO BED AND FORGET IT.

Heat and humidity returned to SW Iowa

88º here in Clarinda, IA with "feel like" of 94º -- the ole humidity has returned.  Turned on A/C this morning for first time in a week.

Not that boredom has set in, but here are some photos of insects.

This creature was parked on my pile of bricks in the back yard.

Photo taken in back yard.

Been working on a glass display case.   This is walnut I have worked up from rough cut lumber that was a Walnut tree just north of the Cabbage farm house south of Clarinda.  I took the tree down in 1988 and had it sawed   Has had plenty of time to dry, heh!

Nothing much going on here

78º at 10:30 am here in Clarinda, IA with predicted high of 87º today.

Last Monday a very big, fast moving, storm went through central Iowa.  In eastern Iowa, where our son and family live, they believed they had winds from 70 to 102 miles per hour.

These photos are from them, taken shortly after the storm abated.

Photo at right is looking south, just outside the west side of their house.  This huge tree would have done terrific damage to the house had it fallen a little to the east

This huge storm damaged over 10 million acres of corn in Iowa.  Here is a link to Successful Farming story on the storm.  https://www.agriculture.com/video/iowas-derecho-by-the-numbers

After cleaning up the small stuff, this major tree will have to be
commercially removed.

These are some photos of the crop damage in central Iowa.

We only had a short gust of wind that day and a few drops of rain.  Lucky by location.
Derecho
Check out this incredible 14-hour GOES East storm-centered IR coverage of the destructive derecho that swept across the Midwest on Monday starting with initiation in Iowa to the formation of a classic bow shaped leading edge racing toward Michigan and Indiana. Our youngest granddaughter, Emily, celebrated her 28th birthday Wednesday with her boyfriend, sister and family and her Mom & Dad at Iowa River Power Restaurant in Coralville, IA.

Still staying around the place, mostly.

Wednesday

75º here in Clarinda, IA at 9:30 am Wednesday

Generally a cool forecast for August!

Some flowers just on north side of house.

Took this picture of the steel frame for the new building  from the hospital parking lot,
while riding trikes last evening

Not much to report.  Took an elderly friend to Council Bluffs yesterday to Dental Surgeon.  Quick trip up and back.  Crops look good in our area.

GROANER'S CORNER:((   While sports fishing off the Florida coast, a tourist capsized his boat. He could swim, but his fear of alligators kept him clinging to the overturned craft.  Spotting an old beachcomber standing on the shore, the tourist shouted, "are there any gators around here?!"  "Naw," the man hollered back, "Ain't been any for years!"  Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming toward the shore. About halfway there he asked the guy, "How'd you get rid of the gators?"  "We didn't do nothin'," the beachcomber said. "The sharks got 'em."

“When the hockey season was suspended our Zamboni driver went missing. We weren't worried as we knew he would resurface.”

So a burglar broke into my house...
I put the red dot on his chest and my cat did the rest!

"Paint" by numbers - on the smartphone

Recent weeks I got into several apps of paint by numbers and Phyllis also picked up on it.  Our phones are tied together, so saved pictures...
